Trump is reportedly terrified of becoming an inmate. Former Trump staffer Alyssa Farah Griffin appeared on CNN to explain why she believes the 45th president is "worried that he will end up in jail."
Griffin was asked to try and make sense of Trump's Christmas outburst where he spitefully took aim at a variety of people, chief among them special counsel Jack Smith.
"Just a merry spirit, a joyful spirit," Griffin quipped. "It is vintage Donald Trump, and he's known for the unhinged holiday rants and then he follows up with a clip of him in "Home Alone II"...it shows that Jack Smith lives in his head in a big way, and he is concerned about the DOJ investigation into the events around Jan. 6th."
What's fueling Trump's run for a second term? For Griffin it's retribution as well as doing everything he can to stay a free man. "This is the driving force behind the political campaign," she explained. "As much as his campaign advisers would want it to be the economy, jobs, foreign policy he keeps going back to the fact that he is honestly worried that he is going to end up in jail, and he needs to be elected president to pardon himself."

That's odd. Here I am worried he won't end up in jail.

If he doesn't pay some price for for trying to overthrow the government then we might as well not have any laws.

(14,689 posts)First I'm worried that he'll even have any jail term sentence at all.
Second I'm afraid that, if that even happens, a judge like Cannon, or the 5 assholes on the SCOTUS, are going to let him off, or at least declare he shouldn't go to prison.
Third, even IF those courts have no choice but to allow the sentence to be carried out, some movement within the Democratic Party will push for a nixing of the sentence for the sake of "national security" or some fig leaf to hand to the magats in a hopeless attempt at reconciliation.

(2,957 posts)He's frantic and completely out of control, which is illustrated by his recent lunacy laden comments. He knows he's guilty of the 91 charges and knows at least one of the cases will go to trial before November 2024 and knows the only thing that will save him is a hung jury.
To use his phrase, next year will be wild so stay tuned.

(11,767 posts)Based on his history and the evidence that seems to be lined up against him apparently, he should be worried that he is going to prison.
Trump's worst mistake was running for the presidency and taking office. He thought it was his ticket to eternal adulation. The problem is that he is a substandard human being. He isn't very intelligent and he is crooked. That worked well enough for him as a celebrity real estate guy in New York, running scams and going to court against smaller companies. He believed his own hype and thought that he could enrich himself and run roughshod over the people and government of the United States.
It wasn't a completely stupid bet. The United States does not have an impressive track record of holding powerful people to account. The problem with Trump is that his appetites exceed his abilities. He is the proverbial bull in the china shop. He may have gotten away with emoluments but he tried to coerce another head of state to get dirt on a political opponent. He got impeached but that may not have stopped him from winning re-election but he completely and deliberately mishandled the response to a pandemic which killed over a million Americans from 2020 to 2022 because he didn't want to "seem weak" and tried to make it a PR issue rather than a public health emergency. When he lost the election because the response to COVID was so bad, he lied about the results and tried to incite an insurrection to keep himself in power. During that time he also stole documents, including some of our most sensitive national secrets and hid them in his golf club and bragged to others that he had top secret documents. He also tried to coerce and pressure multiple state officials and attacked and defamed election workers to try to subvert the election in 2020.
He tried to commit crimes WAY above his level of intelligence and competence, and like I said, the only reason he isn't already behind bars, is that as a nation, we have a PISS POOR record of holding people in powerful office to account. At this point, Trump is so incompetent that he has dug himself into a hole that he can only get out of by a massive effort to somehow win the 2024 election which he really should have NO HOPE of winning.

(45 posts)Trump may not get a single day of prison time. It is my fervent hope that, at the bare minimum, Trump and his bad odors are confined to Mar-a-Lago for the rest of his life. Ankle bracelet, no reporters or visitors other than legal representatives. I am just so leery of Trump ever seeing the inside of a prison. We don't have a good track record of holding old, rich, white guys accountable.
