Aplanned protest at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., amid the Israel-Hamas war has been canceled after facing fierce backlash.
Doctors Against Genocide (DAG), a nonprofit organization aimed at confronting and preventing genocide by uniting health care professionals in action, took to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday to cancel a planned protest at the museum.
---
The protest was planned for Thursday as the organization calls for a stop to what it calls the genocide in Gaza. Backlash against the protest was quickly seen across social media as some pointed toward the use of the Holocaust museum to protest the current conflict.
---
"The goal of our event was to visit the Holocaust Museum to express our empathy for the horrors of that Genocide," DAG said in a statement on X. "Additionally, we wanted to bring awareness to the ongoing Genocide in Gaza. Our initial communications did not sufficiently convey this, leading to accusations from parties with ill intentions.

(62,076 posts)It's obvious that the overall goal of this disruption is to depress votes for Biden and get Trump back in the White House. I think the entire thing - beginning with HAMAS's attack on October 7 and the immediate global propaganda campaign - has been planned and funded by a group of evildoers that all want Trump back because he's easily manipulated.
Putin, Iran, Republican billionaires, China, etc.

(70,758 posts)and is smart enough to know a war in the middle east takes uk out of the headdlines.
plus this shit is so stupid.
This has crossed the line from the offensive to the absurd. Someone is egging this on, someone has something to gain- and I don't think it's the diplomatic wing of Hamas. (Putrump... looking at you)

(10,653 posts)Iran is a major backer of Hamas. So is Russia. Russian information warfare capabilities are well-known, but the Iranian Republican Guards Corps is pretty good at it, too. They're a major regional player.
What drives me crazy is people on the American left sharing memes that - to my educated eye - are generated by propaganda units in either country. I can't really say anything because, well, most people don't know where I used to work and I can't come out on FB or Insta and say so. So I get accused of supporting genocide, or "thinking that I'm smarter than" someone. I just say to them the same thing that I say here - I'm not Team Israel or Team Palestine. I'm Team Both Sides Suck.

(54,246 posts)At least the protestors, some, are no longer wearing their "masks", they have ripped the off, tossed them to the ground, and are now proudly thumping their chests whilst screaming, "Come at bro!". And not just the ones in the streets.

(62,076 posts)Are you saying it's unreasonable for people to object to a protest that was planned for inside the Holocaust museum?
If the plan was to protest inside of the museum, that's just lousy planning and stupid.
Now, if they wanted to stand outside, like the anti-abortion groups did, then I wouldn't have a problem with it!
There have been a few instances of White Supremacists coming to visit the museum...but even though they were obvious about their beliefs... I don't recall any of them creating a situation!

(9,238 posts)This isn't rocket surgery.
And it is increasingly clear to me that while the general tik tok rabble often contain a degree of general ignorance, the organizers do not.
The organizers know very well who and what they're targeting and why.
(And I'll let you in on a secret - the Palestinians are the excuse, not the cause)

(91,775 posts)Instead they attack Dem allies and innocent bystanders. They attack Biden. They attack public buildings with a Jewish name on. Anyone allied with Democrats they will attack. A creche/ Nativity scene. In Australia, a childrens Christmas charity concert was disrupted. Elderly Civil Rights heroes got a verbal and physical bashing, sending a 90 year old woman to the hospital.
This shit is unacceptable. Like a lot of other DUers, I have participated in many, many protests in my life. Some were local, some were in DC, but all were well-targeted. Noisy, but not a soul was injured and not a building was harmed.
There was a lot of support at DU in the beginning, but the way these protestors are making enemies for themselves, all I can say is I hope that support is eroding fast.

(9,238 posts)"It's not that we're gallopingly stupid - which we are. It's that people noticed."
Why is it increasingly going this way? "We're kind of terrible people, but we didn't think anyone would notice, and how dare people draw attention to our rather loud and public actions."
There's this odd mindset settling into our culture that real life and the internet should work the same way, that these people can be shitty people in public with near total anonymity, and if you do not grant this anonymity, somehow you're the asshole.
I've seen people claiming they were "Doxxed!" for doing things openly on video in public. Like, what? Where in the social contract was it written that the public isn't allowed to notice someone's being a fucking idiot out in the open?
"I cannot believe you're witnessing my poor choices. How can you have done this to me?"
If you're out in public harassing people and others notice, that's the dildo of consequences.

(62,076 posts)DU routinely cheers when random white people - usually women - get caught on video being condescending or racist, or even just annoying, and are subsequently fired and shamed. THIS doxxing and shaming is "good" because the perps are perceived as entitled, wealthy, and powerful. (The fact that this is not true in some cases gets brushed aside. Nothing is to interfere with killing the witch.)
This particular supposedly grass roots campaign has cleverly replaced a depressingly complicated reality with a Lord of the Rings type dichotomy where the Israelis are stand ins for Sauron and Palestinians are hobbits. Anyone standing up to Sauron must be a good guy, right? So how could you be so mean as to impose consequences on this righteous warrior??

(9,238 posts)And here's the thing.
If you made a Venn diagram of the kind of people who tried to ruin that woman's life and those who are currently running around campuses repeating antisemitic sentiments while insisting their faces and names never be known, you'd not be far from seeing a circle.

(14,331 posts)Pro-Palestinian protests are fine if they dont degenerate into rank anti-Semitism (which they all too often do, unfortunately) but choosing the Holocaust Museum is making obvious their true intentions.

(3,198 posts)There might be a few, but the dolts who think that Hamas is right and Israel wrong seem to be, unfortunately, more from our side. Every single POS chanting 'from the river to the sea' wishes that the state would have been annihilated in 1948.

(7,143 posts)It only took a minute to ascertain which groups were going to bandwagon this thing. The Right looks to be following Napoleon's observation: Never interrupt your enemy while hes making a mistake; its bad manners.
Never doubt, though, that if they had something to gain from attacking Jews - other than gleefully watching the Left fracture - they'd bare their rotten fucking teeth and pounce.
ETA: There's also the third temple shit, wherein the Christians who control modern "conservatism" support "Israel" in part because they believe (incorrectly, of course) that the end-times will lead to the annihilation of the Jews. That looks like Israeli support and is usually, ignorantly, confused with Jewish support.
