Mississippi welfare funds wound up in a Ghanaian gold bar hoax, court filing alleges

Text messages obtained by Mississippi Today and an aggressive new court filing from a key welfare scandal defendant chronicle how funds intended to help Mississippi’s poorest residents may have ended up in the hands of a Ghanaian scammer. The movie-like alleged scheme involves thousands in welfare funds that were never returned, a purported sale of gold bars, and a scientist’s threats to involve the FBI and former Gov. Phil Bryant.

And, yes, I know that change was made during the Clinton administration, but it has resulted in less money for the poor. I’m reading a book on poverty in the US, and the author cites statistics that, on average, only 22 cents per dollar of the block grants go to needy recipients. The rest goes for state bureaucracy and many purposes not even related to helping the poor, especially in Republican states where officials have used the money to buy cars, pay for Christian crisis pregnancy centers, and programs to encourage marriage (none of which work). That needs to change if Democrats once again control all of Congress.

Was for? But I thought middle class New Jerseyans had to pay their fair share? We were to be punished for funding our own schools, police, roads, etc etc so Mississippi could buy gold bars in Ghana.

Hmm

state that hates the poor and legitimate welfare recipients - like children, actually wasted this much money on a scam? Wow.
