why did they support Civil Rights and Voting Rights?

Why didn't they just become another arm of the Republican Party?

We all agree that what Nikki Haley said about cause of the Civil War was typical Dixie right-wing revisionist cowardice. Nikki Haley should have stood up and faced the issue of slavery and why it caused the Civil War—but she didn’t.

Her answer caused an outcry—as it should have—and hopefully alienated potential supporters in both the Republican Party’s primaries this year and perhaps in the general election.

If I were a Republican running for the top job, I’d be praising President Lincoln and laying wreaths at every Union war memorial I could get at, but why should we interrupt Republicans while they’re making deep-fried Dixiecrat mistakes?

then went on about it being individual freedom. It was about government not telling you what you can do or
not do. What I heard was you should be free to own slaves, it isn't the government's job to tell you what to do.
She never said she was against slavery from what I heard. The old state's rights bs.
