Green Day's "American Idiot" Takes Aim at MAGA Agenda in NYE Performance
Green Day took aim at the "MAGA agenda" during a performance of their iconic anthem "American Idiot" during a performance on New Year's Eve.
Originally released in 2004 as the title track of their groundbreaking rock opera album, "American Idiot" was a scathing critique of the George W. Bush administration and the post-9/11 political landscape. Fast forward to the present, the band is now taking aim at the greatest threat to the United States Donald Trump.
During their live performance on ABC, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong transformed the lyric "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda" to "I'm not a part of a MAGA agenda." After they unleashed the new lyric, the crowd erupted in cheers. Green Day, and punk rock music in general, have historically taken aim at fascism and far-right movements. The band has a history of using their music as a form of protest, and the updated lyrics showcase their determination to address the current political climate head-on.
