A Jewish law student at Rutgers University claims he could be expelled from the school after exposing antisemitic rhetoric on campus, according to a new lawsuit.
Yoel Ackerman alleges he was punished after he complained about another Rutgers law student who had allegedly published a social media video denying Hamas attacked Israelis on Oct. 7, according to court documents.
The Instagram video suggested that Jews exaggerated the attack and Israel was looking for a way to justify genocide against Palestinians, according to the complaint. The footage also referred to Palestinian fighters as kind and merciful on Oct. 7, lawyers said.
The lawsuit also alleges Rutgers faculty posted antisemitic rhetoric on social media, including one that suggested Israel was lying about the Hamas attack to distract from its carnage in Gaza.

It is only Palestinian sources that are implicitly trustworthy.
Straw man fallacy is the distortion of someone elses argument to make it easier to attack or refute. Instead of addressing the actual argument of the opponent, one may present a somewhat similar but not equal argument.
By placing it in the opponents mouth and then attacking that version of the argument, one is essentially refuting an argument that is different from the one under discussion.

(22,696 posts)As I see such arguments made daily.
Point missed is that I have yet to see a Palestinian supporter question a SINGLE claim against Israel or Jews. Yet any claim by such is nearly always doubted, even if corroborating evidence is provided.

(4,030 posts)what corroborating evidence was provided for this story? I went back and I saw ZERO corroborating evidence in the article.

(22,696 posts)But to several incidents of antisemitism or terrorism that people have questioned.
There are those who claim October 7 didn't happen, that it was actuallyIsraelthat was responsible. Do you believe that claim?
RAB910
(4,030 posts)why would you assume I would listen to "those who claim October 7th didn't happen"?
Here's the thing: you have accepted as fact a claim made by a single person with ZERO supporting evidence. How different is that from someone believing a claim by someone claiming October 7th didn't happen? In both cases, one CHOOSES to believe a single person and discards evidence and/or conflicting statements.
Facts matter, and one needs to be careful to determine what is and isn't a fact.

Likewise there have been some claims by Israel I hesitated to accept at face value, wisely in a couple of cases.
Referring to the OP, if you google Rutgers antisemitism, you will see reports of incidents going back years. That leads me to believe there may indeed be some validity to the suit.

For a more detailed look at how this has unfolded, the National Review (sorry!) has more details:
https://www.nationalreview.com/news/rutgers-law-student-sues-school-for-ignoring-rampant-campus-antisemitism/
Yoel Ackerman is being targeted by Rutgers for standing up to anti-semitism. This lawsuit is just one step in our quest to change the culture at Rutgers which has allowed antisemitism to fester, David Mazie, his legal representative, told National Review in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.
Ackerman landed in trouble after calling out a Palestinian law student for sharing an Instagram video within a Student Bar Association (SBA) group chat purporting to expose 3 lies being told about Palestine. The clip sought to debunk the claim that people were raped during the October 7 atrocities and that 250 people were killed at a concert.
(snip)
Ackerman challenged the student to explain why they were sharing a misleading, inflammatory video in an academic group chat.
And it goes from there. The other student appears to have accused Ackerman of defamation and Ackerman was impeached/removed from SBA -- a group he says he didn't want to be a member of anyway -- got the ACLJ involved, Rutgers shut down the SBA and then reinstated it, and now here we are.
Most of this info comes from right-wing sources, so...we'll see how it continues to fester.
