Michigan Rep. Walberg (R) draws backlash for telling Uganda to 'stand firm' after passing anti-gay laws

Congressman Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, has drawn backlash in some circles after video surfaced of Walberg urging Ugandan leaders to “stand firm” in the face of international pressure and condemnation after they passed a law providing the death penalty for acts of “aggravated homosexuality.”

Walberg was speaking at the country’s national prayer breakfast at the president’s residence in Kampala. Walberg’s office told MLive the congressman doesn’t support “the criminalization of homosexuality.”

The country has faced widespread condemnation after establishing a law in May 2023 that outlaws gay marriage in Uganda and punishes same-sex acts with life imprisonment. It threatens capital punishment for acts of “aggravated homosexuality,” defined as same-sex intercourse with anyone over the age of 75, under the age of 18, HIV-positive or disabled.

At the October event, Walberg heaped praise on the country’s 79-year-old president, Yoweri Museveni, an authoritarian ruler who has been president for close to 30 years.
