More data to support the crime is plummeting under the Biden administration.

DETROIT The city of Detroit ended 2023 with the fewest number of murders since 1966. Police Chief James White said the city is on the right path, but more needs to be done.
He said there were multiple factors -- including a nationwide trend in violent crime declining -- led to a significant drop in Detroit. Homicides for the year were down 18%.
This group here is creating what I believe is long-term change in the safety of this city, said Mayor Mike Duggan.
Looks like the city of Detroit is heading in the right direction with major crime being down with nearly every statistic.

(17,396 posts)OP headline states "Detroit sees lowest murder rate since 1966"
Where did the reference to murder rate come from in the OP ? The word rate doesn't appear anywhere in the link.
In fact, the rate is substantially higher than it was in 1966.
An estimated 620,376 people live in Detroit, according to 2022 U.S. Census data. The homicide rate in 2023 was about 41 homicides per 100,000 residents. In 1966, when 1.58 million people lived in Detroit, the rate was roughly 15 homicides per 100,000 residents.

(5,352 posts)Cuz crime is definitely NOT down here. We had the most murders in 26 years, and almost a THOUSAND carjackings. Damn near DOUBLE last year. In a city of less than a million!
I'm not sure what needs to happen, but I'm sure what the city is doing is 100% not working.

(24,438 posts)We saw a spike during Covid, and it was falling slightly and then fell sharply in 2023.
And not just murders, violent crime and proprty crime likely saw significant drops too.
The economy is strong right now, strong economies with strong wage growth lead to lower crime rates. The economy Joe Biden has built has strengthened the people at the bottom and in the middle. In fact, wage growth at the bottom of the work force was far in excess of inflation for the duration.
The media needs to cover this drop as much as they covered the spike of a couple years ago.

(16,385 posts)And even with the spike a few years ago we were nowhere near 1970-1990s rates of violent crime (some cities were exceptions of course). Republicans have been using the fear of crime and the idea that crime is higher than ever since Nixon because they know that people look on the past with rose-colored nostalgic glasses and dont remember how things actually were.

(24,438 posts)But so is regular media.
The local news knows crime is falling, but they'll lead stories with, "With crime on the rise, how you can protect yourself."
And NextDoor is a huge contributor to perception. Every other post is about porch pirates or late night Ring video of someone checking car doors. And the comments always contai the phrases, "it's so bad now." and "it happens everywhere now."
We know violent crime is down. But property crime is too. When you look at the crime rates from the 80s and 90s vs now it's a massive decline. But no one had social media and Ring video cameras in the 80s and 90s. There could be 12 car break ins in your sub division in a month in the 90s and you'd have no idea about it. Now if there are two, you are aware of all of the details.

(16,385 posts)Between 24 hour news and Twitter and Facebook, people are informed of every little crime that happens. Democrats really need to push back on the crime issue and tell people how Republicans are liars.
