The team representing South Africa in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup which is being hosted by South Africa has responded to controversy over the pro-Israel sentiments of one Jewish player by stripping him of his captain duties.
As is the case with all such events, CSA [Cricket South Africa] has been receiving regular security and risk updates regarding the World Cup. We have been advised that protests related to the war in Gaza can be anticipated at the venues for the tournament, announced the host organization in a statement. We have also been advised that they are likely to focus on the position of the SA Under-19 captain, David Teeger, and that there is a risk that they could result in conflict or even violence, including between rival groups of protestors.
It continued:
CSA has a primary duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup and must accordingly respect the expert advice of those responsible for the safety of participants and spectators.
In all the circumstances, CSA has decided that David should be relieved of the captaincy for the tournament. This is in the best interests of all the players, the SA U19 team and David himself.
David will remain an important and active member of the squad and we wish him and the team every success in the tournament. The newly appointed captain will be announced in due course.

(22,695 posts)For the team and player, why would demoting him remove the threat?
Seems more like the problem is he spoke his mind. And is Jewish.
Can't have one of "them" captaining the team...

(10,969 posts)I dunno. I mean, maybe we shouldn't? Sounds like they've some issues with Jews.
Just a note that David is what courage looks like. Not people in masks ripping down posters of hostages and spray painting Jewish spaces.
Just putting that one out there.

(10,969 posts)That's how people want to play this? If you're Jewish and have opinions, and we cannot protect a Jewish player's safety, get rid of the Jew?
And you're pretzeling that into acceptability?
Should we just fund the expedition to go find where the mask was thrown or . . .

(10,969 posts)Usually there's some element of plausible deniability.
This is plain, "Go after the Jewish teenager. It's fine."
Which, you know, almost want to give credit for the honesty. Nothing mushy about this one.

Given his sentiments, did you expect them to allow this kid to lead their team in a World Cup in South Africa.
Stop and think about the reason given for 1980 US boycott of the Olympic Games.

Security for all international sports events is provided by host governments and international federations.
This is the reality of global sports.
Meanwhile there are more than 10,000 dead Palestinian children.

(96,043 posts)I read the statement cited as saying the 'security concerns' were not over anything the team-member might do because he was a Jew, but because they feared his official presence would meet with demonstrations likely to become violent. It's granting a heckler's veto, basically, but not an unreasonable concern in present circumstances. In other words, the Anti-Semitic feeling (with the SA government in open advocacy for Hamas we can drop any 'pro-Palestine Anti-Zionist' tripe in this quarter) is so endemic it strikes me a bit odd that someone who may actually have had concern for a comrade despite his ethnicity draws the charge in particular....

His removal is consistent with RSAs position on sports land politics.
