by: Emily Brooks, Alex Gangitano, The Hill
Hunter Biden reversed course Friday and said he would agree to give closed-door testimony to Congress if the House Oversight and Judiciary committees issue new subpoenas.

(9,958 posts)Not his Dad's presidential campaign. If I never hear the name Hunter Biden again it will be too soon. And I realize he's being used, but he did get himself into this mess and now I wish he'd STFU and settle it with as little drama as possible.

(7,860 posts)any fabrications against the maga questioners. Maybe all along, the gop knows they have zero evidence and will face plant again.
Maybe HB and dems will make a stronger case in the media about contradictions and lies the maga gop have been telling...easy case to make, and now that Hunter and Lowell have the nation's attention they can go on the offensive to correct misinformation. They can summarize 6 years of DOJ investigations and ask why. He is a victim of politicization and hasn't really combatted the gop and media narratives...yet.
Next week is a short week and they have deadlines looming...and the maga questioners will have their hands full either ousting MJ or allowing a vote on a compromise bill. Would look bad to be pursuing side shows next week.

(3,722 posts)His lawyer got a new subpoena issued since the vote hadn't been taken to issue the first one. He won on that score. Also, Hunter's lawyer will be there and other Democrats to verify the TRUTH.

(10,181 posts)The subpoena needs to be confined to evidence the House thinks Hunter may have that pertains specifically to the hearing (of course, this actually has nothing to do with evidence).
For example, if the GOP House cannot control themselves and start questioning Hunter's "balls", personal and family life, or addiction issues, Hunter can, upon advice from his attorney, refuse to answer anything further.

You have not explained why you are not interested in transparency and having the American people witness the full and complete testimony of Mr. Biden at a public hearing. If you issue a new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr. Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition. We will accept such a subpoena on Mr. Bidens behalf.
And such a subpoena would come with negotiations, as they always do. Norm Eisen in Rawstory says:
And the coup de grâce, Eisen continues, Hunter is offering to negotiate new testimony or deposition. Hes put the committee in a box & criminal contempt will not be enforced by DOJ in these circumstances.
Not only will this move derail a DOJ indictment, it may very well have derailed a successful House vote this coming week.

... "If you issue a new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr. Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition. We will accept such a subpoena on Mr. Bidens behalf," said the letter obtained by NBC News ...
Hunter Biden's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, argued that the subpoenas issued to the president's son have so far been "legally invalid," especially because they were issued before the House voted to authorize the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, which it did in mid-December ...
"I write to make you aware (if you are not already) that your subpoenas were and are legally invalid and cannot form a legal basis to proceed with your misdirected and impermissible contempt resolution," Lowell wrote. "And you two, of all people, should know that is the case."
Lowell noted in one of the letter's footnotes that during the Judiciary panel's markup on Wednesday, Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., suggested a procedure for a hybrid process in which Republicans could hold a public deposition or hearing with alternating rounds of questions by Republicans and Democrats, as it's done in a closed-door deposition. Lowell said four Republicans voted in support of such a process ...

(6,703 posts)to hang on Joe Biden. I did not know that they needed to impeach Joe before there would be a valid subpoena for Hunter. Interesting.
I was also disappointed on his about face, but then decided it's a game of chess that the Repubs will lose. For one thing, the Repubs seem like they don't really want to depose him. Maybe they will say yes, or maybe they will dither, preferring to stand on what they think they have. They think they have him in a corner. He might have some legal problems in there, but contempt of Congress won't be it.
Plus, if they don't issue a new subpoena, then the whole country can see that he keeps offering, but they don't ever take him up on it. So, that looks bad for them.
They don't have a shred of evidence against Joe. If Hunter goes to jail for something, it won't be because he sold his father out. They are both handling this with a lot of dignity. I am glad that he walked out on MTG and her morbid fascination with his genitalia.
I thought that Hunter looked strong that day, but my most favorite person is Jamie Raskin. These two guys together really kicked ass.

(2,419 posts)Unfortunately the MSM failed to report that the 1st subpoena wasn't valid, so now people think Hunter is caving when he's just following the law.
