(54,065 posts)An insurrection is a legal term, while riot captures more of the chaos and irrational anger of the moment. And while Trump may have instigated and insurrection, it's not like an orderly execution or effective orchestration of the parts of his coup plot are hallmarks of his leadership style.

(54,065 posts)There's not exactly a Republican program for solving the nation's problems. They're not interested in fixing problems. So when you have a political party but organized around a series of public policies, but rather just a warm feeling of superiority over other humans, that leaves them hate dependent and inclined to engage in personality cults.
Back when I was a kid they specialized in extreme liberty-fetishism and a cowboy myth of rugged individualism with John Wayne and Barry Goldwater. Only that didn't win them elections. But once you had Reagan blending in religious zealotry and a carefully coded messaging of hatred of The Other, they'd finally concocted the perfect blend of Soviet-style hero worshiping and fascist-style pep rallies as ego trip.
Once they perfected it with Reagan and Dubya, it was just a matter of waiting around for the right charlatan to come along and march the lemmings off a cliff.
