He would be 111 years old.
He was a Professor Emeritus and there is a $5million endowment chair in his name at a major university. Retired decorated major and veteran of WWII and Korean War.
Above all, he was a great human being, story teller, scientist and father.

(37,597 posts)Dad was a captain in a Cavalry Recon. Got his commission in the Horse Cavalry.
Two weeks on the move waiting for clear skies for some air support to get out. Two weeks of never more than an hour or two of sleep in bitter cold.

(23,727 posts)Was in his early eighties when he closed up shop and retired. Only then would he talk about his
overseas experiences when asked. Always had this feeling something happened over there he
wasn't proud of like accidentally killing someone or maybe seeing all the death and bloodshed. .
Just remembered......he talked about how when they liberated a concentration camp in Germany
and some soldiers were throwing up their lunch at the awful sights & smells, the prisoners were
picking the stuff up to eat. Hearing Dad tell that story one day almost made me barf. So maybe
this was what he always tried to forget.

(71,542 posts)Our neighbor could not live in her newly insulated house. The insulation back then had formaldehyde in it...she was way too sensitive. So he set about making a safe foam. He was an engineer but really could do anything. He taught himself Organic Chemistry and developed the first carbohydrate-based insulation and flame retardant. It was invented in our basement and our garage. Once he left a sample on top of the furnace and it came on...a kind of smoke was emitted. It woke everyone up. Mom was not amused.
He also invented the lights that move in operating rooms. He was working for a company so they got money...but the first time they used them...there was a glitch and the lights didn't stop and knocked out the surgeon. My Dad was a remarkable man...kindest man I ever knew (except maybe hubs). Happy Birthday Dad.

(37,597 posts)Dad only told me funny stories about the wars. Later in life he went blind and I drove him to a reunion for his WWII outfit. So many came up to thank him for getting his Company out without a single loss. Lots of great stories I would have never heard. He was great at giving others credit to others.
He wrote his PhD on genetics and nutrition based on a study he did on identical twin cows. It was such an important paper, he was hired in by the university as a full, tenured professor to begin.
