Half of Americans agree with Trump's 'poisoning the blood' immigration rhetoric

There’s always been a symbiosis between Donald Trump and right-wing rhetoric. His 2016 campaign for the Republican presidential nomination was successful — surprisingly successful — because of his willingness to embrace arguments and assertions that were considered beyond the pale for his more traditional opponents. By picking out and then defending (to whatever extent was necessary for his audience) claims about immigrants and terrorism, among other things, he tapped into a strain of argumentation that was often kept out of sight. He helped bring the rhetoric into the mainstream.

On Sunday, CBS News presented the results of a new poll conducted by the polling firm YouGov — results that offered a stark example of this pattern, of how even extreme right-wing arguments are now barely outside the norm.

Respondents were asked by YouGov whether they agreed with Trump that immigrants entering the United States illegally had the effect of “poisoning the blood” of the country. This is not just right-wing rhetoric, mind you, but a reflection of some of the most extreme racial politics in modern history. It is an explicit depiction of immigrants as dangerous, but specifically in the context of posing a threat to national identity. It is the language of fascism.

Nearly half of Americans agreed with it.

Is truly lost. I see no redemption. I'm going to start being more aggressive in my plan to leave the country as there is no saving this and why would you want too? A country full of hate, violence and suffering.

Our country is utter trash now and everything is a scam. I have friends in states that view them as non-human. One of the had a Trumpanzi tell them, “I can’t wait until it’s legal to kill freaks like you.”

The only thing that’s keeping me alive is the people I love. I have no hope at all for the future. That and trans suicides have become comedic fodder for MAGAts lately. I won’t give them the satisfaction.

(kind of) the acceptance of people of color, different religions and LGBTQ+ . I notice how almost every new sitcom or TV show regularly has a big mix of different people. I think it is great.

And there is going to be backlash when this happens because it makes racists itch all over. So maybe they act more racist. But the trend I see, is toward acceptance.

The UK has myriad problems, and I struggle as a way overqualified employee in my job. But at least there are hardly any guns, the healthcare system needs work (but it functions well despite Tory attempts to kill it), and Labour will likely take over soon.
If I had no family, I would never step foot in the US again.

You should listen to David Feldman's podcast from yesterday. He talks about what a cruel, awful people the US has become (not that we were a particularly kind or good people to start with).

But right-wing anti-immigration candidates have been winning all over the world lately. Look at Argentina and Netherlands , and Italy in 2022.

My guess is most of the respondents interpreted the question as being about migrants and the border rather than a question about race.

75% of all Republicans who responded.

You Gov surveys are kind of random, I think. I am on their list and I take the surveys because I get Amazon gift cards. However I don't think the fact that I receive a particular survey in any way indicates that the survey base is statistically sound

like most polls. I'm on their list, too, and I respond for the same reason - Amazon gift cards. I have no idea how they can quantify their overall accuracy. For political surveys they always ask whether you're a Dem, GOPer, Independent, whether, e.g., you're a strong Dem, whether you voted in the last election, who you voted for, who you intend to vote for, etc., but they can only count up the percentages in the total responses. How do they determine whether and to what extent those responses reflect any national trends?

Breaking military and law enforcement memberships down by party affiliation right wingers are over-represented.

Roughly 70% of marines self-identify as right wing. If 75% of them agree with the "blood poisoning" concept, that's nearly half of the marine corps. That suggests that military loyalty to the country is at an all-time low.

That doesn't even consider what's happening in police departments and jails throughout the country.
