The irony about the 2024 election is, at least according to polls, it would be more difficult for President Biden to defeat any Republican nominee other than Trump.
However the thought of Trump being the Republican nominee and therefore within a coin flip of winning back the White House is so terrifying I honestly wish Republicans would nominate anyone but him.
With the electoral college Biden could win the popular vote by 10 million and still "lose" to Trump. Imagine the psychological effect that will have on our country and our allies.
They already don't fully understand how in the "greatest democracy on earth" Trump became President in 2016 despite Hillary receiving nearly 3 million more votes. And 4 years later how he was acquitted by the Senate for inciting an insurrection despite losing the vote 57 to 42.
Even if Biden had a 60% approval rating I'd still be nervous about Trump possibly winning.
This is going to be a tough general election. Not because a majority of Americans are desperate to re-elect Donald Trump. But because with the unfair electoral college, Republicans control of the House and MAGA friendly judges the will of the people could easily be overturned. Which is why Trump can't stop smiling like a cheshire cat lately. He knows the entire system is rigged in his favor.

(769 posts)She could easily mount a strong campaign if she'd actually go after Trump directly and present herself as the last chance for never-Trump Republicans to block him from becoming the party's nominee.
The Kochs could easily keep her campaign funded until super tuesday.
I'd be surprised if Haley officially suspends her campaign before then. Her donors probably want her to stay in as a backup to Trump.
He could stroke out. Or his cognitive decline may become so apparent to voters in the coming months that his poll numbers take a nosedive.

(32,734 posts)Her statements over the past few weeks will guarantee that she is unelectable because she will get very little if any of the black vote.
Plus, there's still too much sexism and racism for maga to get on board. They are not enthusiastic about her. It would be a hold the nose type vote, if anything.

(15,288 posts)...Trump keeled over from a heart attack, I don't think the rabid Trump base would turn out for Haley the way they'd turn out for Trump.
Maybe Haley could win over some independents, more than Trump could, but I don't think that would make up for the disappointed, angry base. Those that weren't merely unenthusiastic about Haley might be conspiracy-addled into thinking Haley was in on assassinating Trump, never being willing to believe he'd died naturally.
Of course if Haley were the nominee, and Trump were alive yet somehow lost the primary to Haley, Trump would run as an independent, go total scorched earth, and steal far more votes from Haley than from Biden.

That ass is not hard to beat. Look at how well being a murderous, pro-birth, let's arrest a woman who saved her life by dealing with an ectopic pregnancy party is working for the GQP US Taliban, pro Putin, Fascist, tRaitor party, even in RED states. Plus, she wants people working into their 70's or to DIE before they can collect retirement/social security.
Nikki Haley says America's retirement age is 'way too low' and needs to be increased, while also calling on cognitive tests for politicians over 75.
Nikki Haley, a Republican presidential candidate, said she wants to up the full retirement age.
She proposed increasing the full retirement age for "people like my kids in their twenties."
The idea is wildly unpopular, according to polling.
GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley said she thinks the US' retirement age is "way too low" and needs to be increased.
In an interview with Bloomberg Markets on Thursday a day after she attended the first GOP presidential debate in Milwaukee, Haley said the country should increase the retirement age in an attempt to address possible Social Security and Medicare insolvency.
"The way we deal with it," Haley said, "is we don't touch anyone's retirement or anyone who's been promised in, but we go to people like my kids in their twenties when they're coming into the system, and we say the rules have changed."
Asked by Joe Mathieu what is the "right age" she'd propose, Haley didn't have an exact answer but said that "65 is way too low" and needs to be increased in relation to the average US lifespan. While she mentioned 65 as too low, Congress upped the full retirement age in 1983 to 67 years old for anyone born in 1960 or later.

(34,483 posts)That if the normal retirement age is moved up much past age 67, we would see a lot of people 67+ applying for disability benefits based on physical problems that tend to increase with age, eg, arthritis. So any savings would have to be offset by that.
