Donald Trump has a big problem ahead

Donald Trump has a big problem ahead
A whole swath of GOP voters appears firmly committed to not voting for Trump in November.
By Sam Stein and Natalie Allison

Donald Trump has a problem no matter what happens in New Hampshire on Tuesday night: There’s a whole swath of the Republican electorate and a good chunk of independents who appear firmly committed to not voting for him in November if he becomes the nominee.

It’s an issue that became starkly apparent in polling ahead of the Iowa caucuses, when an NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll of voters in that state found that fully 43 percent of Nikki Haley supporters said they would back President Joe Biden over Trump. And it’s a dynamic that has been on vivid display as the campaign shifted this week to New Hampshire.

“I can’t vote for Trump. He’s a crook. He’s too corrupt,” said Scott Simeone, 64, an independent voter from Amherst, who backed Trump in 2016 and 2020. “I voted for him, and I didn’t realize he’s as corrupt as he is.”

They don't all fall in the same category.

If they were, House Republicans would not be trying to oust their own Speaker again.

If you looked at govtrack you would see there is a wide range of views. Just within 435 members in the House.

The same with voters. The percentage of those voting in the primaries is low. Only about twenty percent of eligible voters vote in primaries. Even those are not all Democrats or Republicans. Those not voting in primaries still have their hard core supporters. But there is a wider range of groups that are more likely to peel off from anything that is crazy.

Being outvoted by independents and "rebellious" Republicans/conservatives is the reason why he didn't win in 2020. Throw in another generation's worth of young voters, plus women outraged by the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, and Duh Don is already well on his way to losing the popular vote for the THIRD consecutive time.

It won't matter how many states Chump "wins" in the Repuke primary, because that's only a small percentage of Repukes voting for him. But once it gets to the general election in November, he's going to feel the flood of votes AGAINST him, including his own Party. At least half of the Repuke party members will refuse to vote for Chump in November (no matter how they voted in the primary.)

Very FEW independents and ZERO Democrats will cast their vote for Chump. (That includes the fake Democrats who are really Repukes who only join our party to mess up our polls and primaries.) The idiotic news media will be left speechless in November when they see how few Americans actually vote for Chump. All this BS building up his candidacy for the last year will amount to nothing.

Joe Biden will win in a landslide.

Tue Jan 23, 2024, 12:54 PM

Doesn't mean we can afford to be complacent or take our foot off the gas because too many enablers and donors are invested in a Trump win, not bc of Trump, the candidate, but the prospect of getting their hands on power once again, and then throttling the country, molding it into what they want.

But Trump himself is a known quantity. He's exposed himself, again and again, as a mentally deficient crook, depraved and amoral. That seemingly plays with the True Believers, those who still think he's the Strongman they want and need, but for the American majority, he's a horror show, a walking nightmare posing as a man.

2024 is our election to lose and we need to put everything into it. The only way MAGA retreats is by a massive blow at the ballot box. The economy is roaring back and consumer confidence is up. Inflation (despite what the MAGA talking heads spout) has been reduced and continues to fall. The stock market is at historical highs.

Yes, the border is an issue and the Gaza conflict needs resolution. Third-party runs present a challenge.

Still, Joe Biden and our Democratic Coalition are in a strong position. Biden's economic policies are coming online and making a difference. The Dobbs' decision is still a huge factor, a flashpoint of outrage for women, young and old. We've won the vast majority of special elections; elections in Virginia were a triumph. And Joe Biden has been a good President countering much of the obstructionism the GOP has sent his way.

As Simon Rosenberg has said repeatedly: I'd rather be us than them.

I'm Peggysue and I approve of this message.

Popular vote means something to me but our arse backwards electoral college system means it has no meaning. Possibly less than four states will determine the election. No way he wins in Illinois where I’m from.

Yes, don’t rest on laurels. No complacency. Vote and get others to vote too. Civic duty. There are way more or us than them. Removing this Orange Shitstain from certain ballots is a possibility too. That wouldn’t hurt. He did engage in insurrection and he did give aid in comfort. Section III of the 14th Amendment should be determined to be self-executing.
