There was an "alarming" 30-fold increase in measles cases in Europe last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.
Health chiefs are warning that cases are still rising and "urgent measures" are needed to prevent further spread.
More than 30,000 people were infected in 2023, compared to 941 during the whole of 2022.
The WHO believes this is a result of fewer children being vaccinated against the disease during the Covid pandemic.
People are sacrificing their children on the altar of their political beliefs. Five children have died, thry said, from measles complications. FIVE!!!
Fuck you, RFK, jr. You're a piece of shit for telling lies about the safety and efficacy of vaccines. You are killing children.

(20,591 posts)Measles and other childhood diseases were all but wiped out by generations of children receiving vaccines.
Then the "the sky is falling" crowds, who blame everything under the sun on those same vaccinations, reared their ugly, illiterate heads.
I just recovered from COVID-19. I got every vaccine and booster as soon as they became available to me.
If I hadn't, being almost 75 years of age and having several co-morbidities, I'm positive I'd either be intubated in a hospital, or dead by now.
Yes, vaccines work. And to those who deny this fact or are hesitant to believe in them, you'll reap the whirlwind of sick and dying children because of it.

It's a lived experience for him so he knows that vaccines work. How did he get so screwed up that he became and anti-vaxx idiot?

(13,003 posts)They talk like they are an authority on immunology, and most of them only had very basic high school biology or not even that !!!!!
It will be like during the Corona Pandemic when all the Repubs were refusing vaccinations.........LOL Then some one pointed out that the death rate was much higher for the un-vaccinated and suddenly, Trump/Abbott/DeSantis/ and other Republican politicians changed, literally overnight, from "no vax" to "get a vax".....
As has been well documented, the fact that they don't get their children vaccinated, not only effects THEIR children, but every un-vaccinated child their child comes in contact with............
On rare occasions I would listen to the Rush Limbaugh daily show. He would start every show with something major that he wanted to rag on. He would say the subject, topic or "in the news" happening, and then would always say: "And let me tell you how you want to think about this"..............He was as much to blame for the republican's millions of brainwashed cult members as any thing else......

(983 posts)When it hits you, it resets your immune system back to zero. So by the time your immune system takes out the measles virus, that's the only thing you are immune to.
As you age, there are a lot more 'bugs' floating around in your system that the Immune System is taking care of for you. If an adult gets measles, it wipes out the 'library' of immunities that you've built up over your lifetime. Everything from influenzas, mumps, whooping cough, to cancers. That means you're going to be hit with a bunch of evil stuff all of a sudden. That's why adult measles is considered so dangerous; it's often fatal.
Kids haven't been exposed to so many various 'bugs' and can often survive a Reset, but much of the time an adult can't. That little series of shots you get as a little one, as early as possible, has lifetime benefits of Massive Proportions.
And these idiots want to do away with this.
Anti-vax is a form of child abuse, and a case could possibly be made for negligent homicide of the 'innocent bystanders'. SMH

(17,623 posts)My parents were poor, so we very rarely went to doctors unless it was truly serious. That's probably why I do remember being taken to a doctor when I had measles. I remember that the doctor was worried about my eyesight, so on the way out I was given a cheapie pair of sunglasses and told to wear them even if it wasn't sunny. I thought I was way cool because sunglasses for us children would have been extravagant. When my parents and I got home my mother put me in bed a dark room, pulled the shades, and told me not to open it and to stay in that room.
To this day, I wonder if the measles affected my eyesight in later years. I had to get glasses when I was 19, but probably needed them earlier (again, we were too poor for glasses). I have wet macular degeneration in one eye and dry in the other.

(114,616 posts)as long as they get what they feel is their due in the fame department.
It's not just him or Wakefield, it's also the false sense of security a lot of people have because decades of vaccination almst had that particular disease gone. We were so close, but it allowed them to think it was safe to skip the shots, nobody likes to see the kiddies get stuck and cry. So now their kids are getting sick and some of them are getting very sick.
I'm afraid it's human nature, people just stop believing prevention is necessary when it looks like the danger is past. Well, it wasn't and now the disease is back with a vengeance.

(3,017 posts)I was born behind the Iron Curtain in 1950. Even though my father was one of the nomenklatura in Budapest's municipal government, I had them all. A "mild case" of polio, that left me with a gimpy walk. Mumps and measles did a number on my hearing, and gave me the tinnitus that still plagues me. Whooping cough which damned near killed me, and frequently had me staggering out of bed, struggling to breathe. Chicken pox scarred me for life. By the time we emigrated in the winter of 1956, I had gotten immunity to everything but a meteor strike, but it was the hard, painful and terrifying way.
So you can be sure, my children got all of their vaccinations, and I've kept up to date on anything that comes around!

(7,309 posts)And me too! I got my covid vax and boosters, shingles, flu, pneumonia and soon to get the rsv vax. I want it all because I know they work. I want to die a very old lady and not from a preventable disease.

(3,065 posts)If childhood vaccinations were down because of Covid, it might be because people were avoiding the doctor's office to avoid getting sick, or the doctor's being overwhelmed with patients. Perhaps there were supply chain issues?

Unfortunately this jerk is the current highest-profile point person in the family. Hes the one who many will think of first, when the name Kennedy comes to mind. Who do you think of - somebody from the 1960s & 70s, or the Kennedy in the news these days?
Hes shitting on the brand.

(12,667 posts)And that was bad enough. Constant itching, hot and cold shivering. My sister, who also got it, had scars from it.
If you get the chicken pox vaccine you are probably protected against shingles too.
Shingle is a deadly disease. It is the most common reason for suicide due to pain. By itself it won't kill you, but it can make you wish it would.
