Steve Kornacki @SteveKornackiWe've never seen a gap between the independent vote and the Republican vote in an NH GOP primary like we saw last night. Trump won R's by 49, Haley took independents by 22 -- a swing of 71 points. Previous high was 40.

remember...
An NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll of voters in that state found that fully 43 percent of Nikki Haley supporters said they would back President Biden over Trump.

(17,534 posts)We know he is a sexist misogynist scumbag - no surprises there that he would attack her and threaten that she is going to be going through some stuff.
But this is what is scary for him - independents are more drawn to her than him and he needs independents.
This news and statistics about independents was the best news to come out of New Hampshire. And all the attacks on Nikki Haley may give him temporary toddler relief - and may even lose him more Independents and moderate Conservatives - and Republican women.

(68,766 posts)A lot of long-time Republicans are desperately hoping that Trump is not the nominee. They don't particularly like Haley but she's the only alternative remaining.
Trump will get the nomination because a large majority of the remaining Republicans (as more reasonable people flee to "Independent" status) worship him.
The question is whether the "Independents" will vote for him in November, stay home, or vote for Biden.
Democrats must get out the vote. Whichever party gets out the vote wins in November. We could take it all - White House, Senate, House - if we GOTV.

(615 posts)rush limdruggy years ago told repugs to register to vote as a Democrat and vote in primaries against the leading candidate.
Looks like this was sort of used in NH, independents voted for Haley in this primary. The amount of independents who voted on the Democrat side is low compared to those who voted in the pug side.

(23,179 posts)They became Independents. Trump rules over a shrinking Republican Party. An increasingly debased crown.

(15,377 posts)We have a lot of independent voters, by far the largest voting block, and they dont like Trump at all.
Unfortunately they really are independent in their voting habits, and their presidential preference doesnt translate down ballot.

(10,151 posts)One of the memes (among many) that we Democrats ought to be using is to portray Orange Julius as an enemy of democracy and a wanna-be dictator. I hope theres a way to make Independents feel that voting for Joe isnt just about voting for a Democrat, its about preserving the rule of law, free elections, and government by the people for the people.

(8,486 posts)In November.
A really, really bent election is the only one they can win, so that's what they're gonna engineer. Right down to tossed ballots, refused certification, and the state legislatures declaring the winner.
And there is Nothing which mainstream Republican voters can do about it. The GOP has finally and irrevocably gone full rogue insurrection.

By this coming November, none of it is going to matter. It will be obvious to all of us - including the Repukes - that Chump is done in politics. He'll never be a viable candidate again after this. We just have to get through the next 10 months of his garbage.
