We can't afford to lose her.
The idea of Susan Rice taking her place is unimaginable.
Hillary's stature, her credibility, her relationships and her skills are sorely needed.
If she does leave, we need someone that is at least her equal. Can we appoint Bill?

dipsydoodle
(42,239 posts)at wording UN resolutions on Libya for one so that actions beyond the intent of the resolution become possible. In doing so she lost the respect and trust of both Russia and China - the two countries with which the many of her dealings would occur as SOS. That's the exact background to why neither will play ball on Syria.
Yes nominating her would be tripe-ish nonsense.

(24,096 posts)Not some dipsydoodle's judgement, thank you.
have a nice one.

(11,461 posts)you are using the moronic talking point perpetuated by the right to diminished her character, wtf? How about Gen. Patreaus or the CIA excluding certain words or sentences from their statement which was handed to her, are we forgetting that?
dipsydoodle
(42,239 posts)and its specific background. She'd be a liability.
btw - exactly when did the right raise that subject. ?

(11,461 posts)you don't have to look that far to find their comments about Benghazi.

(42,239 posts)That event hadn't even occured when both Russia and China vetoed a resolution on Syria July 19th.

(6,635 posts)at odds with Russia and China on Middle East policy in the UN before this? Do you actually believe that statements and positions given by the US Ambassador to the UN are made without consultation with and direction from the Administration?
Do you believe that if President Obama nominates Susan Rice for SOS, that Russia and China will harden their opposition to US Middle East policies?
Like the hard-right Republicans, you are assuming that Susan Rice is a loose canon operating without direction from President Obama and his policy team. I maintain that Susan Rice is more than qualified to become the new SOS, and Russia and China can go suck it.
dipsydoodle
(42,239 posts)Not really a good idea to tell China to go suck it on any subject. Piss them off enough and they'd hold a fire sale

(42,239 posts)Search the subject yourself and see if nothing else what it would do to interest rates and the effect it would have on the US$ of raising enough foreign currency to support the situation.
billh58
(6,635 posts)we've been at odds with them over the Middle East, North Korea, Trade, and many other policy issues over the years. They are not about to slit their own throats by holding a "fire sale" or fucking with our economy, so that Republican-speak fear point about China "calling in our debt" is not valid on many levels.
As far as Japan goes, they have their own economic problems, and they "own" no one -- including the USA. They are much more dependent on us than we are on them.
So yes, when it comes to US foreign policy, Russia, China, and Japan(?) can be diplomatically told (in a way that makes them enjoy the experience) to go suck it.

(11,461 posts)Susan Rice is more than qualified to be SOS, let's not kid ourselves with joining the republicans in taking a cheap short at her, please.

(9,874 posts)Susan Rice, John Kerry and a host of others could do a good job as Secretary of State. I'm not belittling the fine job done by Hillary, but she doesn't have the entire market cornered on intelligence and common sense.

(13,877 posts)She deserves to move up if she wants to. However, I think there are more Long Knives for Hillary for President than for Bill and Obama combined. That's what worries me.

(32,679 posts)to be SOS. I'm pretty sure Rice has more background knowledge than Clinton.
billh58
(6,635 posts)exactly why the idea of Susan Rice replacing Hillary is "unimaginable?" She is more than qualified, and it appears that President Obama can imagine the possibility quite clearly.
Spazito
(50,260 posts)and Hillary would be the first to agree. Susan Rice is highly regarded by the Clintons. She was appointed to various key positions during the Clinton administration.
"Rice served in the Clinton administration in various capacities: at the National Security Council from 1993 to 1997; as Director for International Organizations and Peacekeeping from 1993 to 1995; and as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs from 1995 to 1997."
Any attempt to diminish Susan Rice smacks of repub tactics and is despicable, imo.

(13,877 posts)The Clintons are both amazing and how they promoted and qualified many of the "not white male majority" makes me love them even more. And Hillary's total class after the bruising primary battle...worthy of honor.

(14 posts)While Susan Rice is highly capable, her performance after the Benghazi tragedy was less than stellar and it gives reason for concern. The position requires someone with immense gravitas and impeccable credentials - a John Kerry, Bill Clinton, Chuck Hagel, Diane Feinstein.
While nominating Rice would be sticking it to the scandal mongering Right - and they deserve it stuck to them - it may not be the best thing for the country.
billh58
(6,635 posts)the whole McLame "she lied to us" thing? Thanks so much for your "concern," and please enjoy your stay.
Spazito
(50,260 posts)The only "performance after the Benghazi tragedy" that should be examined is that of the despicable behavior by McCain and Graham, I am sure you would agree.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)I agree with you, though, for what it's worth. Rice may be very qualified, but what with Iran being on the brink of having a nuclear weapon, Israel gearing things up, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in full flame, Syria, Egypt, etc., etc...... it would be best if the SOS is someone with gravitas, a history of working with some of these leaders, and such. Kerry and Biden come to mind, altho I don't think either of those is interested.
Kerry would be able to step into the job fairly easily. He's worked with some of the world leaders on many occasions in the past. He's well known and is an expert in foreign policy.
Nothing against Rice personally. If she is named SOS, I'm sure she'll do a decent job.

(10,942 posts)from declaring a state at the UN and causing all types of strife. Rice is a bright, capable person who will step into the role and perform it well.
Hillary needs to take some time off, exercise and get ready to win the Presidency in 2016.

(11,464 posts)Rice story.
John McCain
They know Hillary can't run til she quits this job.
Suckers they are. Hillary will be 45. Only reason she did not win the nomination last time was she didn't have Obama's voters.
This time she does.
Obama forever, and what he says so goes the only voters that matter- HIS.

On edit: I just looked at your profile, and it all makes sense now. That's 45 "gungeon" years...

(25,415 posts)Some good, a few great and many bad. But Susan Rice can handle the job just fine. And it is an extremely physically demanding job. Hillary deserves a break and it is what she wants. And Bill Clinton does not want to be SOS, believe me. Being a former President is a luxury.

(10,622 posts)She is a Rhodes scholar with plenty of diplomatic experience. And she is being attacked by the right-wing (and centrists?) for the "sin" of correctly relaying the then-current state of intelligence to the American people regarding the Benghazi incident. There is no substance to the criticism, or at least I have heard nothing I deem to be legitimately faulty with her words or deeds.
She is eminently qualified.
Why do I prefer her over all others? Because they tried to take her down, that's why!

(11,076 posts)She can play the piano ya know! Why are you so hard on Susan. I don't think that the President would recommend anyone who couldn't do the job!
