Top 10 Conservative Idiots #16-1: Honey, I Shrunk The Cult! Edition

Welcome back to the Top 10 Conservative Idiots! Yoooooooooooooo!!! What’s up Santa Ana, how you guys doing? You doing fucking good? Great! We are back, baby! We are baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! We are back! Whew, and does it feel good to be back after what seemed like the longest January ever, am I right? Well before we hit the ground running on the new season for the new year, I want to take a minute and explain where the Top 10 is going. There have been rumors that we may pull the plug on our fine program at some point.. But right now, I can assure you that we ain’t going nowhere. I mean come on, it’s an election year! We can’t leave you guys hanging on what may be one of the most important elections in United States history, can we? What kind of hosts would that make us? Not very good ones if you ask us! As long as Trump and Fox News keep feeding the GOP monster, we’ll keep bringing you the free funny as long as possible! And as we mentioned in our Best Of for season 15, we’re going international! That’s right – in March, we’re heading to South America, in July we’re heading to Canada, and in September, we’re hitting the land down under, Australia, mate! So come on and join us because we’ve got lots of conservative idiots to cover and not a lot of time to cover them all! So it is an election year and we’re going into election mode, so all of our 10th slot tomfoolery is being saved for that oh so important election year coverage. We’re starting with Road To The Primaries, then of course it’s our annual look at red state insanity with our Stupidest State contest and we’re shaking things up a bit this year! Then once we come back in the summer it’s time for the Road To The White House, and the way things are going, we may not have to change intro graphics from the 2020 election, either! Sigh… whatever, just keep Trump and his MAGA / America First goons out of the White House as far as possible! OK that’s enough of the intro, we have a lot of idiocy to get to. But first Stephen Colbert is back with his take about Trump’s cognitive abilities:

So where do we begin this week? Well as usual, whenever the Top 10 is off for an extended period of time, we like to play Catch Up On Stuff We Missed (1, 2) and holy hell did we miss a lot of conservative idiocy in the last few weeks! At the number one slot, we’re just going to dump all of the Trump related news into one slot and get it over with, which includes his latest nonsense at the E. Jean Carroll trial, his latest collection of NFT trading cards, and his insane NYE party at Mar-A-Lago which featured Vanilla Ice dancing with a Ninja Turtle. In the second slot is also Catch Up On Stuff We Missed (2) and republicans have been up to a lot of insanity. Which includes among other things, Kentucky legalizing incest, Dr. Fauci gets grilled by conspiracy theorists, MAGA defunds the IRS, and Ashlii Babbitt’s death is being blamed on the government. Sigh… SMDH. In the number 3 slot this week is also Donald Trump (3) and no, it’s not what you think. We have to talk about the shocking numbers of people who actually voted in the Iowa caucuses, which is revealing a lot about who’s still supporting him after all of his nonsense, and – surprise – his cult is dwindling in numbers! Maybe there is hope! In the number 4 slot this week is Greg Abbott (4). And boy his comments about what’s going on at the US – Mexico border is truly psychotic, and he’s hinted that the GOP wants nothing less than a “final” solution for immigrants, if you catchy my drift! In the number 5 slot this week is a new edition of “We’re All Gonna Die” (5) and extreme weather is affecting large parts of the country and the world! But get used to it, because things are going to get worse and it’s our new normal thanks to client change deniers. In the number 6 slot is of course our weekly visit to the Holy Church Of The Top 10 in “Holy Shit” and this week, MAGA republicans are increasingly making the claim that the presidency is “God’s will” but is it really? We have evidence from our founding fathers that proves to the contrary! In the number 7 slot, after her completely egregious and Fox News sponsored bullying of Harvard’s president, we add New York representative Elise Stefanik (Q – Batshit) to the ever growing list of People Who Somehow Got Elected! In the number 8 slot is a new edition of our weekly venture into the world of online tin foil hat nuttery with Conspiracy Corner (8) – the election is 10 months away and MAGA robodialers are already attempting to gaslight it! We'll tell you how you can protect yourself! In the number 9 (NEIN!!!) slot this week is a new I Need A Drink (9) and this week, a new survey suggests that millennials are tired of dating apps, and we have some bizarre new alternatives for you to try! Finally this week, it’s part 1 of our 4 part series Road To The Primaries (10) and if you thought that Iowa was weird, wait until you see what Fox News and the MAGAs have in store for the next round in New Hampshire! Sigh… why we can’t have nice things! And to close this out, we have the legendary Eagles stopping by! Go see their Long Goodbye tour now, you won’t regret it! Enjoy! And as always don’t forget the key!

Catch Up On Stuff We Missed Pt. 1
[br]
[br]

As usual, whenever the Top 10 takes an extended break, we like to play catch up on stuff we missed, and hoo boy, did we miss a lot in 6 weeks! And what’s really insane is that 2024 is starting the exact same way that 2023 ended – with everyone’s favorite loser president hawking another series of those idiotic NFTs he was hawking last year. Yes, for the low price of $99 in actual money, you can make it back and then some in… fake blockchain money. But this time, there’s a grand prize if you buy all 45 trading cards for the low price of… $4500. Yeah can we talk about that for a second? These are the same idiots who spend all of their time on social media complaining about gas prices, but they have $99 for this ridiculous bullshit? And we’re supposed to take them seriously? WTF. But this one comes with a grand prize – a piece of the “timeless” suit that Trump wore before the first of his indictments – that he then proceeded to destroy in one of his temper tantrums. No wonder he acts like a gigantic baby all the time.

For the low low price of $4,653 (plus taxes and fees), you can own 47 digital Trump NFTs and exactly one physical Trump trading card. It’s the deal of the century, folks.

On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump announced the third installment of his “Trump Digital Trading Cards” series. The cards depict the collective Republican fantasy of Buff Trump decked in various costumes and scenery. They’re cringy, they’re bizarre, they’re a total scam.

In a video announcing the series of cards, Trump took on the tone of a low-budget Fox News infomercial hawking pillows or supplements. The former president claimed some people call his trading cards “pop art, or modern art,” and acknowledged that he wasn’t nearly as cut as they depict him to be.

“I wish I looked as good as I do on these cards, that I can tell you, they give me muscles where — believe me — I don’t have them,” Trump said.

Good question and even we don’t know! But speaking of MAGAs, we have to talk about the spectacular MAGA meltdown as the result of Green Day’s appearance during the New Year’s Eve concert in New York City. And by the way we’re not going to brag, but we have a very special musical guest lined up for our show in Brazil in March, and I’m not going to name names, but let’s say that it rhymes with Shmeen Shmay. But the MAGA meltdown on social media over Green Day changing the lyrics from their classic song “American Idiot” caused quite the MAGA sad. And come on, if you think Green Day is now “woke”, you don’t know Green Day, my friends.

On New Year’s Eve, we learned the improbable fact that a trio of middle-aged, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted punks in notably well-tailored suits can somehow still shock and offend the masses. For Green Day, all it took was changing the “American Idiot” lyric “I’m not part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda” during their performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rocking Eve with Ryan Seacrest — a lyric tweak they’ve been using for years.

The ensuing freakout on social media and conservative news channels went on for days, with some commentators seeming to be downright stunned that Billie Joe Armstrong holds the left-of-center political views he’s been quite clear about for decades. “Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it,” Elon Musk wrote on X.

In the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, we try to make sense of the outsized reaction to Green Day’s performance — and take a look ahead at what it says about the role musicians might play in this year’s presidential campaign, with Andy Greene joining host Brian Hiatt for the discussion. To hear the full episode, go here for the podcast provider of your choice, listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or just press play above.)

And as we’ve said repeatedly – this is an election year. It’s our third one since this program has existed, can you believe that? We started with 2016, then 2020 and now 2024. And only time will tell if we make it to 2028 or we collectively lose our sanity and need to be committed covering the 2024 election. We hope it doesn’t come to that. We’ve survived worse. I mean shit, we survived COVID, we survived the first Trump administration. So how could things possibly get worse? Well apparently we’re at a place now where the GOP is now questioning the outcome of the Civil War. Yeah so not only are racists doubling down about what caused the Civil War, they’re actively saying that America is not racist. Move along, nothing to see here! Please disperse!

Does Nikki Haley think minimizing the United States’s history when it comes to slavery and racism is the key to winning the GOP presidential nomination? It kind of seems like it!

Following up her curious decision last month to not cite slavery as a cause of the Civil War—which she later defended by saying, among other things, “I had Black friends growing up”—the former South Carolina governor declared on Tuesday that the United States, where owning a Black person was once legal, has “never” been a racist country. That’s right, never been racist, including the period in which it was acceptable for Black people to be someone’s property.

Haley’s claim came in response to a question from Fox & Friends cohost Brian Kilmeade, who asked the candidate if she thinks the GOP is a “racist party.” Her full answer was “No. We’re not a racist country, Brian. We’ve never been a racist country.” She added: “Our goal is to make sure that today is better than yesterday,” she continued. “Are we perfect? No. But our goal is to always make sure we try and be more perfect every day that we can.”

They’re taking this “the south shall rise again” thing a bit too literally aren’t they? The last thing I want to catch up with is the January 6th riots. Yes, we’re on the third anniversary now, and why Trump is not doing hard time at Rikers Island is a total mystery, but we’ll save that for another topic. By the way, we have answered your complaints about the fact that we’re not providing enough coverage of the rioters, and I will say we have a new segment coming that will answer your complaints! Stay tuned. What I want to talk about is the right wing’s attempt at gaslighting the J6 riots and also prisoners. One you may have seen on social media trying to get a sob story and sympathy going is Rachel Powell, the infamous J6 “bullhorn lady” who was seen on tape smashing windows and destroying property, Yeah fuck off with your pity party, we know what you did! Enjoy prison. Cue the world’s tiniest violin.

An attempt to generate support and pity just 13 days before she has to turn herself in to serve the prison phase of her almost 93-month sentence on nine counts related to the Jan. 6 riot did not go well for the unapologetic insurrectionist known as the "Bullhorn Lady."

Just days after Christmas, Rachel Powell, a mother of eight from Western Pennsylvania, took to X to assert she has no "criminal history" — despite her conviction in July for the attack on the Capitol where she was filmed hacking at a window with an ice axe.

As NBC reported at the time of her conviction, "Powell was found guilty on a variety of charges, including felony counts of interfering with officers performing their duties and obstruction of an official proceeding."

At her sentencing Judge Royce Lamberth of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia handed Powell a sentence of 57 months in prison with 36 months of supervised release at home prior.

Holy shit have we missed a lot in the last 6 weeks since we’ve been said goodbye to the year that was 2023. But I will say that nothing has given me more joy in that time than this footage that surfaced from a Patriot Front rally in New York City last weekend. Patriot Front, as you know, is a far right neo Nazi organization, and they were marching in New York City near the site of where the World Trade Center once stood. But they were stopped by that most baffling device unique to NYC – the turnstile. Can we roll that footage?

Holy shit, it’s just like that scene from Blazing Saddles! Somebody go back and get us a shitload of dimes!!

How many dimes are in a shitload? Let us know in the comments! But where do we start – 6 weeks is a lot of time! And don’t worry, my friends, we’ve got plenty of primary coverage coming your way. And you know when we do these, I always get someone coming and saying “Oh you forgot blah blah blah”, and I’m sure we did. After all, we only have so much time and so much ground to cover, and it’s my show, damn it! First off, we have to talk about the devastating shootings in Iowa and New Hampshire that happened over the break. And damn it, this shit must be stopped! Of course the NRA and Alex Jones aren’t helping. But once again, it paints a pattern of white males being radicalized on social media propaganda. Just stop watching this shit! It’s bad for you!

The Iowa gunman who opened fire on Perry High School last week appeared to have an active account on the internet chat platform Discord where he previously discussed school shootings and described “gearing up” moments before Thursday’s attack, NBC News has learned.

Dylan Butler, 17, killed sixth grader Ahmir Jolliff, 11, and injured four other students and three staff members, including principal Dan Marburger, before he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said they also found an improvised explosive device at the scene.

Law enforcement is reviewing Butler’s use of social media and tech platforms, including Discord, according to a person close to the investigation.

In the minutes leading up to the shooting, Butler posted a video to TikTok from an account with the username “tooktoomuch” in what appeared to be a school bathroom. The Discord account that appeared to be posting about the shooting used the name “took2much.” (believed to belong to Butler)

And by the way you know who’s not helping the case for mass shootings? First off, for Donald Trump for saying that the victims of this tragedy should – and I’m quoting “get over it”. Don’t believe me? Can we roll that clip? And who else isn’t helping - judges blocking any meaningful gun legislation getting passed. Yes, yet another law that might actually help prevent future disasters and mass murders is once again denied. Sigh… gun nuts and Fox News are the reason why we can’t have nice things in this country. And it’s insane that the party that is the champions of states rights, doesn’t want states to participate in exercising those rights if they pass laws that the MAGAs don’t like. So yeah because of the actions of this judge, expect the next mass shooting to be that much worse. And don’t think there won’t be another one!

A new California law that bans people from carrying firearms in most public places was once again blocked from taking effect Saturday as a court case challenging it continues.

A 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel dissolved a temporary hold on a lower court injunction blocking the law. The hold was issued by a different 9th Circuit panel and had allowed the law to go into effect Jan. 1.

Saturday's decision keeps in place a Dec. 20 ruling by U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney blocking the law. Carney said that it violates the Second Amendment and that gun rights groups would likely prevail in proving it unconstitutional.

The law, signed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, prohibits people from carrying concealed guns in 26 types of places including public parks and playgrounds, churches, banks and zoos. The ban applies regardless of whether a person has a concealed carry permit.

Enough death talk for now. Why don’t we switch gears and talk about our old buddy Elon MusK? Yes, you know him as the CEO of Tesla, Space X, the Boring Company, Starlink, and probably the one he’s currently the most known for – X, the social media network formerly known as Twitter. I’m sure that most of our audience here saw that epic John Oliver takedown of Muskrat back during his year end show in December, right? Well if you didn’t it’s on Youtube and you can see it in all of its’ glorious splendor. Anyway, Elon apparently *STILL* has a sad about that. Oh won’t somebody please think of the oppressed billionaires?

It may be a new year, but Elon Musk hasn't forgotten how the comedian John Oliver roasted him in 2023. "It is rather tragic to see an otherwise capable comedian like @iamjohnoliver become weak sauce," Elon Musk wrote on X on Tuesday.

"The reason he is not very funny these days is because he is too keen to pander to wokeness, which is fundamentally a lie, whereas great humor requires revealed truth," Musk continued.

The British comic had made fun of Musk in an episode of his HBO Show "Last Week Tonight." The episode, titled "Elon Musk," delved into the struggles faced by Musk and his companies, Tesla and X.

This isn't the first time Musk has slammed Oliver for making fun of him. Musk said last month that he thought Oliver had lost his touch as a comedian. "Oliver was great several years ago, but stopped being funny when he sold his soul to wokeness where humor is basically illegal," Musk wrote on December 19.

The last thing I want to catch up on is everyone’s favorite subject – the right wing’s increasingly draconian war on education, and the MAGA hysteria over book bans, and their hard denial that they’re actually doing this. But one of my favorite stories – Bill O’Reilly, once a champion of the book bans, is mad that the idiots actually banned his books Killing Reagan and Killing Kennedy. But the state of Florida, obviously, in its’ continued race to the bottom, did this. They fucking banned the dictionary, encyclopedias, and the Guinness Book Of Records, because kids and porn, or something. WTF. Stop voting for stupid people!!!

"A school district in Florida’s panhandle reportedly pulled multiple dictionaries and reference books off its library shelves for including descriptions of “sexual conduct.”

Escambia County School District allegedly removed five different dictionaries, eight encyclopedias and the “The Guinness Book of World Records” from its collection after determining the titles could run afoul of Florida’s HB 1069 bill, which restricts sexual content from being taught in schools.

The books were among the 1,600 titles the public school district took out of circulation last summer, according to a statement from free speech advocacy group PEN America.

Decommissioned titles also include biographies of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, Nicki Minaj and Thurgood Marshall."

Donald Trump
[br]
[br]

Before we go any further, I want to preface by saying that I don’t want to keep talking about Donald Trump. I am tired of seeing his crap posted everywhere night after night, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In fact before the end of the year last year, we just flat out banned all coverage relating to Trump’s rallies because of two reasons – 1 is that it could easily take up all 10 spots just debunking his bullshit. And the other is that he has one of these stupid rallies like every other day. But the reason why I am bringing it up for the purposes of this entry is this. We’ve been covering the MAGA shit show since 2015 now. And while it seems to be getting worse, there is a gleam of hope coming from the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries this week. That is that people are getting tired and fed up with his constant bickering and yammering 24 hours a day. His rally attendance numbers are dwindling rapidly. And fewer people voted for him than half of the regular attendance at a University Of Michigan football game, and we haven’t even got to the hilarious part yet. Yeah we’ll get into that in a minute. But here’s what is happening.

Donald Trump muscled past his rivals to capture the first 2024 Republican presidential contest in Iowa on Monday, according to Edison Research projections, once more asserting his dominance over the party as he seeks a third consecutive nomination.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley were in a battle for second place, Edison projected.

With Trump's victory all but a foregone conclusion given his lead in public polls, the runner-up competition was expected to produce most of the evening's intrigue, as DeSantis and Haley seek to emerge as the chief alternative to the former president.

Iowans braved life-threatening temperatures to gather at more than 1,600 schools, community centers and other sites for the state's first-in-the-nation caucus, as the 2024 presidential campaign officially got under way after months of debates, rallies and advertisements.

OK we haven’t got to the really hilarious part yet. And for the sake of this piece, let’s call it… how about since the right wing hates Disney so much because they were mean to Ron DeSantis, let’s call it “The Incredible Shrinking Cult”. Nah, it needs more zing. How about… “Honey, I Shrunk The Cult?”. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! I think Rick Moranis would approve! Even CNN showed that 64% of those voting in New Hampshire no longer identify with the MAGA cult. But I seriously wish that the media would stop with the damn hyperbole. No, he didn’t win in a “landslide”. He didn’t “crush” the competition. There was no competition! Shit, I’ve been in stadium crowds that had more people than the number that voted for him last week! WTF!

Former President Donald Trump won the Iowa caucuses Monday night, capturing the first state in the 2024 Republican presidential nominating process as he seeks to quickly dispatch his rivals and consolidate his control over the party.

With 99% of the results in, Trump had 51% of the vote and the largest margin of victory in a competitive GOP race in Iowa history. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won the coveted battle for second place over former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley.

Over 110,000 voters participated in the 2024 caucuses, falling well below the high expectations for turnout. Just 40 delegates — out of over 2,400 nationwide — were at stake in the contest, the first measure of how the Republican field stacks up in the 2024 primary season.

Trump won the Iowa Republican caucuses with strong support from White evangelicals and very conservative voters — key voting blocs in these caucuses — and groups he lost in 2016 when voters were less convinced of his conservative credentials, according to interviews with caucusgoers as they went in.
https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/iowa-caucus-2024-updates/

Yeah he may have been a winner… but he’s also a loser. You may have also seen MAGA loons like Marjorie Shit For Brains bragging on that site formerly know as Twitter that it’s a revolution because Trump won all 99 counties in Iowa. Here’s the thing – Iowa was already one of the reddest of red states in this country. We don’t care. And the other thing – nobody lives in those counties! Land can’t, and doesn’t vote! And of course, we don’t need to remind you that the bony MAGA king himself is warning people what would happen if he’s kept off the ballot because he tried to overthrow the government.

Of course you can. But if there’s one thing that the Iowa primaries showed us, it’s who really supports Trump, even after all the endless shit he’s put this country through in the last 10 years. And in case you haven’t guessed the primary demographic that still supports Trump is – wait for it – white males. Which make up for… *gets out calculator*… 30% of Iowa’s population. So if we extrapolate this to the whole country, if Trump only appeals to one demographic, then he’s going to be in a lot of trouble when the election actually happens. And if you thought the 2020 election was a colossal shit show, well you ain’t seen nothing yet!

Iowa Republicans showed up on 15 January in force for Donald Trump, voting overwhelmingly in the nation’s first primary for the former president, whose grip on his party has only deepened as he weathers numerous lawsuits and 91 felony charges relating to his business dealings and involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The Iowa caucuses confirmed polls that have consistently shown Trump carrying a comfortable lead ahead of the remaining Republican challengers.

Before the caucuses, the Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, repeatedly reminded voters and the press that he had toured all of Iowa’s 99 counties. Trump won 98 of them. With the exception of college graduates and voters under 30, who for the most part caucused for DeSantis or the former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, most other demographic groups reported strong support for Trump this year.

Even young Republican voters favored Trump slightly more strongly this year than in the 2016 Iowa caucuses: CNN entrance polls showed a modest 3% jump in caucus-goers under 30 who support Trump, while his share of supporters over the age of 30 nearly doubled across the board.

Since 2016, Trump has consolidated support among evangelical Christian voters, a key block in Iowa. Just over 20% of Trump’s Iowa supporters in 2016 self-reported as evangelicals or born-again Christians; evangelicals made up 53% of his supporters in 2024 Iowa polling.

Greg Abbott
[br]
[br]

You know it’s a fucked up time period that we live in when Greg Abbott, the Fox News installed governor of Texas, has to be told by the Supreme Court – no he can’t use his razor wire death traps at the border to kill immigrants at will, in order to fulfill a conspiracy theory unfolding every night on the Sean Hannity show, and it’s not the number one thing on this list. But Fox News isn’t letting the GOP go soft on the border. In fact, Hannity flew to DC to give the MAGA reps a pep talk a few weeks ago like he was their regional manager or something. It’s absolutely shocking and disturbing what this cretin has been able to get away with. And Fox News lets him. Because they are a bunch of bloodthirsty psychopaths. And how do we know that they’re a bunch of bloodthirsty psychopaths that run the Lone Star State? Because they fucking told us they were. And Greg Abbott, the leader of the Lone Star State, has iterated what the GOP’s real plans for the southern border are. And you’re not going to like them. They basically involve… well, murder.

Abbott’s remarks, openly contemplating the use of lethal force against refugees at the Texas border, have sparked justifiable outrage. The possibility of state-sanctioned violence against vulnerable individuals seeking asylum is not just deeply disturbing; it reflects a chilling disregard for human life and international law.

To even hint at the use of deadly force as a deterrent against people fleeing violence and poverty is to approach a fascistic ideology, where rules and human life are considered less important than keeping order and control.

Abbott’s words show a dangerous mindset that views refugees not as humans in desperate need of help but as potential targets whose lives are negotiable, recently echoing Donal Trump’s language, “Immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country.”

The Governor’s rhetoric shows a deviation from the values of empathy, compassion, and the rule of law that should guide the actions of any elected official. It is a grim reminder of the moral decay that has infiltrated the highest levels of the Republican Party. The politics of fear and power have consumed Texas Republicans, and they have lost sight of their duty to protect and serve all people with dignity.

Yes, these people suck and boy do they! It’s insane that these people are going to great lengths to look for a stable place to live where their government doesn’t want to kill them, only to find out that their new government… wants to kill them. We went from “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses” to “fuckoff and die, illegals!”. Yes, our standards have fallen drastically. And if you’re not laughing at this, you’re part of the problem. But what’s even worse – they actually have to explain to you why they’re not just flat out murdering immigrants. Yeah that’s a scary thoughthere!

It’s not exactly a secret that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has taken rather aggressive steps to address border crossings in the Lone Star State. But the Republican’s administration has not resorted to literal violence, and as The Texas Tribune reported, the governor has an explanation as to why not.

During a radio interview last week, Gov. Greg Abbott said that Texas has used every tool to control the border short of ordering officers to shoot migrants crossing over illegally, once again drawing concerns about the potential impact of his rhetoric around immigration.

In context, the governor fielded a question from radio host Dana Loesch, a former spokesperson for the National Rifle Association, who asked Abbott about boundaries and legal limits.

“[F]or the people who don’t live in border states, explain the hierarchy and the process,” the far-right media personality said. “Like, what can be done like right up to the line, where maybe they would come and say, ‘Governor, you’re breaking the law, we got to arrest you for trying to enforce the law at the border.’ Like, what is the maximum amount of pressure that you as governor can implement to protect the border?”

Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooly shit. Let’s think about this here for a minute. The only reason that Greg Abbott isn’t going full Nazi on the border is that he’s afraid of the Biden administration putting the kibosh on him. What the actual fuck. He’s basically admitting that the GOP and Fox News won’t accept anything less than a “final” solution at the border for migrants, if you catch my drift. That’s some straight up Nazi bullshit there. And we seriously wonder why it’s an absolute mystery as to why Abbott, Patrick, Paxton, and their Fox News cronies aren’t being dragged before the Hague to explain these crimes against humanity. And don’t worry, we’ll get into this way more next week.

The Supreme Court has allowed the Biden administration to remove razor wire barriers that Texas erected along a 29-mile stretch of the Rio Grande meant to block migrants at the Southwest border.

The 5-4 ruling Monday was a temporary victory for the Biden administration and gave the federal government the upper hand in its fight with Texas while the underlying lawsuit continues.

"Texas’ political stunts, like placing razor wire near the border, simply make it harder and more dangerous for frontline personnel to do their jobs," White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández said in a statement Monday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, authorized the installation of the razor wire as part of a broader effort to deter migrants from crossing the U.S. border from Mexico. That included a 29-mile stretch of the riverbank in Eagle Pass, much of which is private land.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2024/01/22/supreme-court-razor-wire-texas-border-immigration/72169822007/

Damn right! And not only is Texas not taking no for an answer, they’re doubling down on the border death traps, because it seems Greg Abbott is listening to his boss Sean Hannity, more than he’s listening to SCOTUS. And three of the justices that voted against him – are – wait for it – Republican! And these are people who do not like to be told “no”. The real border crisis that’s not being reported on is that Texas is being held hostage by some disgruntled news network employees who are as bloodthirsty as they are crazy. Don’t think the SCOTUS trial is the end of this, we’re just getting started.

Republican congressman Chip Roy is encouraging officials in his home state of Texas to ignore a Supreme Court ruling on the fate of a razor wire fence along the US-Mexico border, which state authorities erected to prevent migrants from crossing.

The court issued an order on Monday allowing for US Border Patrol agents to cut or clear out the wire that Texas officials installed as part of Governor Greg Abbott’s aggressive tactics to deter migrants from entering the US through Texas.

The sharp wire caused injuries and made it difficult for US officials to aid migrants, so the Biden administration asked the Supreme Court to intervene in the ongoing battle between the state and the government

But despite an order from the highest court in the land, Mr Roy, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus faction of the Republican House of Representatives, told Texas officials to disregard the decision.

We’re All Gonna Die: Frozen Electric Car Hellscape
[br]
[br]

Hey everyone, guess what? We’re all gonna die! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!! WOOOOOOO. WOOO. WOO. So what’s going to kill us all this week, you might be asking? Well, I answer you good sir or madam – it’s your electric vehicle! And no, we’re not here to decry electric vehicles. No way, we’re very much in support of them! But what you might have seen, especially if you live in an area that’s been the subject of the extreme weather apocalypse that we’ve been facing lately, is that electric cars aren’t exactly equipped to properly handle the extreme cold. And well, we also learned that gas powered cars aren’t exactly equipped to handle the extreme cold weather, either. But we’re here to cut through the media fearmongering on what you might have seen in the news this week – piles of Teslas, Toyotas, Fords, Kias, and other EVs that are simply put, unusable because of extreme climate change. That’s apparently one thing Elon didn’t exactly inform Tesla owners of when they went and signed the papers.

Winter weather can cause bigger headaches for electric vehicle drivers than shoveling their driveways. Many are finding cold temperatures reduce their cars’ driving range.

Fully electric vehicles, which run exclusively on battery packs, typically lose an average of 41% of their range when outdoor temperatures drop to 20 degrees Fahrenheit and the heat’s cranked on, AAA researchers have found. That’s because batteries don’t work as efficiently in the cold and regulating cabin temperature can gobble up a significant amount of power, depending on how a car’s HVAC system is designed.

It was a rough time to start driving for Uber in Chicago this month, said Marcus Campbell, who signed up with the ride-hailing company last week using a rented car. Campbell said he has already found the frigid weather buffeting the Windy City can make for a longer workday and fewer fares, requiring him to spend several hours waiting his turn at a charging station and powering up.

“When I should be asleep, I’m outside charging my vehicle, falling asleep in my car,” he told NBC News’ Adrienne Broaddus. “I’m not making any money.”
https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/ev-battery-range-cold-weather-charging-rcna134355

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Back up. Let’s extrapolate this here for a minute. Unless you’re running like some kind of weird block chain that runs while you’re charging your car, how are you making money on a $50K+ vehicle, exactly? I feel like they kind of buried the lead on this one! But that’s a different topic entirely! And yeah let’s think about the Uber drivers here for a minute! Like how are we supposed to get to the airport if they can’t charge their vehicles? Another piece of the puzzle. But once again this is that extreme climate change we’ve been talking about the last 5+ years. What’s really interesting is that it only seems to affect Teslas more than other vehicles. And no, Elon, you can’t expect to fix this problem in a software update.

Electric vehicles, or EVs, are known for losing efficiency in cold weather, an issue that Consumer Reports investigated last year due to concerns about significant variations in how different electric cars held up in cold weather. At the same time, the federal government is dangling a $7,500 federal tax credit, a financial carrot that helped boost EV sales to a record 1.2 million vehicles last year.

"EVs definitely lose some of their driving range in extreme cold," Scott Case, co-founder and CEO of Recurrent, a battery research firm, told CBS MoneyWatch.

The issue is similar to what can occur with other battery-operated devices in the cold.

"If you go skiing with your iPhone, you might notice that the battery will burn through more quickly, so halfway through the day it might run out of juice, where normally it would last all day," Case noted.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/teslas-electric-vehicles-cold-weather/

No we’re not gonna die just yet. Look at it in terms of simple physics. Cold air and batteries do not mix at all. Like olive oil and vinegar. So now we play everyone’s favorite game – the blame game. And who do we blame for this catastrophe? Do we blame EV owners? Do we blame EV manufacturers? Do we blame Elon Musk? Do we blame EV chargers? And where am I going with this line of questioning? Even I don’t really know. But one thing we can blame on this is the weather. And the extreme weather we’re seeing right now – brought to you by News Corporation, the parent company of Fox News. So yeah let’s cut our losses and blame Fox for this one.

Don’t blame electric vehicles, including Teslas. That’s the admonition from EV research site Recurrent after it decided to conduct what it called a quick analysis of charging data from 4,296 Tesla Model 3 vehicles this week in freezing temperatures. Recurrent looked into issues after some Tesla owners in Chicago complained they were stuck in long lines at charging stations in this week’s frigid weather because it took longer than usual to charge cars, while others reported their EVs weren’t holding charges.

The culprit appeared to be an unfortunate combination of bum chargers, cold batteries and even colder temperatures, according to Andrew Garberson, head of marketing at Recurrent.

“Failure to preheat the batteries, called preconditioning, certainly played a role in Chicago's sub-zero charging delays,” wrote Garberson in an interview conducted by email. “In an ideal scenario, each driver would arrive with a warm battery so the car could immediately begin fast charging, instead of using the charger to heat the battery for up to 30 minutes. However, it sounds like it was a perfect storm in Chicago, where several chargers were out of order, people arrived from the airport with extremely cold batteries, and a traffic jam formed quickly.”
https://www.forbes.com/sites/edgarsten/2024/01/19/perfect-storm-to-blame-for-cold-weather-ev-charging-woes-re-new-study/?sh=7a437f5c3947

Look here’s the thing – EVs aren’t perfect, and leave your opinions about Elon out of this because we’ll save that for another topic. But there is one clear key component that will prevent future disasters that is already pretty much standard on most new electric vehicles. It’s a heat pump. And it’s also why gas cars fare better in colder weather than electric vehicles do. Now if you live in Arizona or Southern California or Las Vegas, no problem. You’re in the clear. But if you live in the mountains, you might want to be better prepared next winter or for the next snow storm comes, because as we say around here, sooner or later, we’re all gonna die. And you don’t want to be left out in the freezing cold because your car doesn’t work, either.

An ICE vehicle’s efficiency is around 15% lower at 20°F during city driving than it would be at 77°F. It can also drop by as much as 24% for short 3 to 4 mile trips. EVs drop 39% in mixed city and highway driving, so it makes sense to optimize the features of your EV for weather, such as our CleanTechnica colleague, Chris Boylan wrote about this week.

Yes, sub-zero temperatures can negatively affect the efficiency of an EV. EVs face a high level of energy consumption for passenger compartment heating in cold climates. Battery capacity can diminish when it is cold, reducing the average distance that can be traveled on a normal charge. Starting the EV may become more tricky in cold weather, too, as the energy consumption for heating (and it’s the same for hot weather cooling) EVs causes a decline in battery charge and driving mileage, as does turning up the cabin heating.

EVs mostly use lithium ion batteries to power their electric motors. Lithium ion batteries are very happy at temperatures between 50 degrees and 110 degrees Fahrenheit, with a commonly-accepted ideal 70 degree temperature. In freezing temperatures, lithium ions slow down and don’t hold energy very well. Thus, they generally perform worse than normal in cold climate conditions.

Holy Shit

[br]
[br]

Gather around my fair brothers and sisters! It’s time to take a seat in the pew and pass the collection plate, for the Holy Church Of The Top 10 has convened and it’s time to remind you that the holiest among us are the most full of:

My fair congregation! Please be seated! We are back, everybody! And boy does it feel good to be back after our long winter slumber! I hope everyone enjoyed our spinoff program Holy Shit: The Sunday Sermons, and I can assure you that there’s plenty more coming your way this year! For this is an election year, and I don’t need to tell you that there’s plenty at stake. So you might be asking why we can get away with talking politics when we’re supposed to be tax exempt? Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret: we’re an entertainment program! But actual churches are going all in on the unholy Dark One! I of course speak of a man so foul, so depraved and disgusting that his name DARE NOT be spoken in my church! In fact, some, like our current and soon to be former Speaker Of The House, Mike Johnson, are making the insane claim that whoever is president is God’s will. I mean can you believe this shit? Here we are cringing at the thought of church and state merging like two airlines, but these churches are getting away with this! So let’s test this theory.

In October, Rep. Mike Johnson said his ascension to the position of House speaker was no coincidence, suggesting that God had ordained it.

“I believe that scripture, the Bible, is very clear that God is the one that raises up those in authority," the Louisiana Republican said in an eyebrow-raising first speech as speaker. "He raised up each of you. All of us. And I believe that God has allowed and ordained each and every one of us to be here at this specific moment.”

On Wednesday, reporter Pablo Manríquez asked Johnson at a news conference if he believed that "Joe Biden's presidency is God's will," in an apparent reference to Johnson's speech in October.

After talking at some length about the Bible and his faith, Johnson said: "It must have been God's will, then. That's my belief."

(A reminder that Johnson was one of 147 Republicans in Congress who voted against certifying Biden’s election win — a win that he now apparently believes was “God’s will.”)

That’s it? That’s all you got? It’s “your belief”? OK then whatever you say. Well it seems that GAWD is going to be working double overtime this year fulfilling all of these demands, because there sure seems to be a lot of them coming from multiple directions, and each one is crazier than the next. You really don’t want to open that can of worms because we will go there, my fair congregation! After all, we’ve been doing this thing 6 years now and they only seem to be getting crazier. Well behind door #1, we have this guy who says that those who try to interfere in the election will be struck down by GAWD, and that’s so extreme we can’t even wrap our heads around it!

During a recent episode of his “America’s Black Robe Regiment” program, Rev. Bill Cook announced that his organization is going to be “combating election fraud” during the 2024 elections by heading to the swing states to warn that anyone “involved in election fraud” will be “struck dead by God.”

“We’re going to be combating election fraud in all the swing states,” Cook said. “We’re not going to just sit around and say the election was stolen and there’s really nothing we can do because the other side kind of controls the levers of power. We’re going to call for fasting and prayer for our elections. We’re going to call for sentinels—liberty sentinels—to stand up and contend with wickedness in our electoral process.”

“You read about what happened to Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 when they lied to the Holy Spirit,” Cook continued. “They were both struck dead by God in the instant. We’re going to bring that story to bear on everyone who’s involved in election fraud. We’re going to be saying to them, ‘Beware when you do this because you might just find yourself standing before God a lot sooner than you thought, and it’s not going to be a happy time when you do.'”

“Nothing would cure election fraud like a couple of people dropping dead in the moment,” Cook proclaimed.

And so do we! But really, MAGA Christians? Do we need the White House being controlled by the likes of these psychopaths? No we really don’t! In fact, our founding fathers would be vehemently opposed to what you are doing right now. The White House is not yours, OK? We rejected you back in 2020 and we’ll happily do it again! Do we really need the sons of the unholy Dark One trying to convince us that he’s doing GAWD’s will? Of course we don’t! But they’ll keep hammering this fact home until the brainwashed cult start repeating it, and it looks like they’ve already went ahead and done that. This is our first edition of the new year, and we’re already banging our heads against the wall!

The night before the Iowa caucus, self-proclaimed “prophet” Amanda Grace hosted a “Night of Prayer for the Trump Family and the Nation” livestream event that featured several members of former President Donald Trump’s family and inner circle, among them Trump’s son Eric and his wife Lara, and his attorney Alina Habba.

The Trumps and Habba were joined by the likes of Trump confidante Roger Stone, conspiracy theorist Clay Clark, MAGA pastor Jackson Lahmeyer, and “prophet” Robin Bullock, who collectively made the case for Trump heading into the caucus.

The program began with Grace interviewing Eric and Lara Trump, and Eric declaring that his father is being guided by God.

“I think he’s created the greatest political movement in history,” Eric Trump said. “And I really do believe that someone, something is looking down and guiding him every single day because there’s no way in the world he could have been where he is today without the intervention of God.”

“I feel it. I know it,” Trump added. “I really do believe that there’s divine intervention there. I think somebody was guiding him. He’s a remarkable father. He did a remarkable job for the United States of America, and I truly pray to the Lord that he wins again [and] he sorts out this country because we are in dangerous times, and it’s scary.”
https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/divine-intervention-eric-trump-says-his-father-is-being-guided-by-god/

Yeah… that’s the last person who should be lecturing us about divine intervention. Really? This is who you’ve chosen to be your savior? The guy could barely save himself from his 91 indictments and counting! But it’s no surprise that the MAGAs continue to go there, and they keep getting more dangerous and extreme with their rhetoric. I keep thinking it’s January. We’ve got 10 more ridiculously long, excruciating months of this ahead of us! But one thing we will be doing is giving you fuel for the fire to use against your MAGA friends and neighbors! When they start spewing this crap, you need to know where it’s coming from!
.
In November, the National Association of Christian Lawmakers announced that Republican state Rep. E. Werner Reschke had been named the organization’s “state chair” in Oregon.

The National Association of Christian Lawmakers is a collection of right-wing state and federal legislators and religious-right activists dedicated to electing “godly leaders in our nation at every level” for the purpose of seeing its “biblical worldview spread across the nation.” Founded by longtime religious-right activist and ardent Christian nationalist Jason Rapert, the NACL seeks to “take authority” over every level of government, primarily by feeding far-right model legislation to its members to be introduced in their respective states.

Reschke appeared on Wednesday’s episode of Rapert’s “Save The Nation” program and made it quite clear that he shares Rapert’s radical vision.

When Rapert asked why it is important for Christians to be “involved in government and voting and be a part of the authority in our country,” Reschke pulled no punches.

“What drew me to it was primarily looking at our history, and the men and women who were part of that history and building this nation,” Reschke said. “Whether it’s George Washington, whether it was [James] Madison, whether it was Abraham Lincoln, whether it was Ronald Reagan—who was the first president I got to vote for—you go back through history and you look at the men and the struggles that they faced and the faith that they had.”

Yes it is, especially support for the ungodly Dark One! This is just our first sermon this year, we’ve got 40 more of these ahead of us! I need a drink, my fair congregation, it’d better be some good and strong holy water! Mass has ended, may you go in peace! That’s it this week for:

People Who Somehow Got Elected: Elise Stefanik
[br]
[br]

Politicians at the state and local levels who are so toxic, you wonder how they’re able to get away with the things they get away with. This is:

This week, it’s New York representative Elise Stefanik (Q – Woke). In case you haven’t noticed, the GOP is going all in on their war on education. And lately they’ve been taking the fight everywhere, whether it’s elementary schools with the draconian level book bans or high schools and universities because they might be - wait for it - woke, whatever that is.. But lately, ever since the onslaught of the terrifying and horrible atrocities being committed in the Middle East, they’ve been taking the battle to higher universities. Case in point: the recent takedown of Harvard president Claudine Gay. Which was cheered by most on the far right and was seen as mostly a blatant power grab. Here’s the thing that makes this even weirder – Stefanik herself is a Harvard graduate. And we can’t help but wonder what her takedown of these university presidents has in order. In fact there’s something that we just can’t quite put our fingers on. Oh wait, it’s racism. And also Fox News inspired bullying. Both are the reason why we can’t have nice things in this country.

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik had a sharp response to the news that University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill was stepping down from her position over the weekend: “One down. Two to go.”

It was Stefanik’s line of questioning at a hearing last week before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce that attracted the most attention from the roughly five hours of testimony. A series of exchanges went viral when Magill and other university presidents at Harvard and MIT failed to condemn calls for the genocide of Jews as explicitly against campus rules on harassment and bullying. The answers from such high-profile leaders in higher education sparked bipartisan backlash and condemnation, which led to Magill’s departure and increasing pressure to oust both Harvard’s President Claudine Gay and MIT President Sally Kornbluth.

Stefanik, a Harvard graduate herself, has been leading the charge since the hearing to highlight and investigate campus antisemitism, and her efforts have attracted supporters from across the aisle as well as former President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, Stefanik blasted her alma mater, whose president has not stepped down from her post despite some calls for it. Harvard President Claudine Gay has has the unanimous support of the university’s board, Harvard’s highest governing body said in a statement Tuesday.
https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/11/politics/elise-stefanik-antisemitism-hearing/index.html

Yeah BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! This was not, nor ever was about antisemitism, and it was never about the war in the Middle East. This was thinly veiled racism and a blatant attempt at a far right power grab. But here’s the thing, MAGAs – you can’t denounce antisemitism in others if you overlook and continue to excuse the LITERAL NAZIS that walk among your ranks! This never was, nor was ever about antisemitism, let’s make that perfectly clear! This was just flat out bullying egged on by her boss Sean Hannity every night on Fox News. And it’s not going to get any better any time soon.

“This forced resignation of the President of Penn is the bare minimum of what is required,” Stefanik said in a statement over the weekend. “These universities can anticipate a robust and comprehensive Congressional investigation of all facets of their institutions’ negligent perpetration of antisemitism including administrative, faculty, and overall leadership and governance.”

Former Penn board chair Scott Bok also resigned Saturday.

Trump praised Stefanik as “very smart” over the weekend.

“I guess they’re all gonna be losing their jobs within the next day or two, but one down, two to go,” Trump said in a speech hosted by the New York Young Republican Club late Saturday night – repeating Stefanik’s line hours after she put her statement out.

Stefanik has a polarizing reputation on Capitol Hill as a staunch supporter of Trump. But the congresswoman has managed to amass Democratic support for pushing for the ouster of university presidents. She co-wrote a letter dated Friday with Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida demanding those presidents’ removal. The letter was also signed by Democrats Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey and Joe Courtney of Connecticut.
https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/11/politics/elise-stefanik-antisemitism-hearing/index.html

No we’re straight booing you. Now let’s switch gears to the 2024 election – something that Stefanik has been very vocal about recently. And by very vocal, we mean that she won’t shut the fuck up about them, which is very typical of your average MAGA voter and House representative. But one thing Stefanik has made clear is that she won’t certify the 2024 election if it doesn’t go in favor of Fuckface von Pantload, that is one thing we are very clear of. And once the election is finally over and 2025 is here, we can be certain that we’ll be at shit hitting the fan levels of chaos in the House if the MAGAs don’t get their way, much like the whining toddlers you see in Target who scream about their parents not buying them that shiny new toy. But we can be assured of one thing – absolute chaos. Sigh… another reason why we can’t have nice things in this country.

Republican representative Elise Stefanik claimed credit for the resignation of Harvard University president Claudine Gay on Tuesday, after she quit in the wake of a string of plagiarism accusations and an antisemitism row on the campus of the exclusive Ivy League university.

“I will always deliver results,” Ms Stefanik said in a press statement. “The resignation of Harvard’s antisemitic plagiarist president is long overdue. Claudine Gay’s morally bankrupt answers to my questions made history as the most viewed Congressional testimony in the history of the US Congress.”

Ms Stefanik was part of the committee that questioned the presidents of top US universities, including Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) about campus antisemitism and free speech.

At the time, her grilling of the university leaders mostly centred on protest chants referencing the Palestinian “intifada” and the slogan “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” which Ms Stefanik interpreted as a call for genocide against Jews.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/elise-stefanik-claudine-gay-harvard-president-resignation-b2472445.html

Yeah clean that up! But here’s the thing that’s also really troubling – while the rest of the world is noticing that Trump is vastly deteriorating, Stefanik has gone on the defensive attempting to defend his recent behavior. It can’t be done, and Trump is just losing it on every single level. But even after 2020 and the events of January 6th, it looks as if not only do republicans want a repeat of that, they’re practically salivating over the idea of another coup, and this one being successful. And we can’t overlook that Elise was among the ones who were hiding that day, and was very vocal about it. She seems to be on the defensive now.

Rep. Elise Stefanik’s spin on Trump’s cognitive decline was so bad that it should provoke questions about her own cognitive state.

Rep. Stefanik tried to explain away Trump’s inability to distinguish between Nancy Pelosi and Nikki Haley by saying, “That isn’t a mix-up. The reality is — Nikki Haley is relying on Democrats, just like Nancy Pelosi, to try to have a desperate showing in New Hampshire. President Trump has not a step. He is a stronger candidate, stronger than he is today than he was in 2016 and was in 2020. Compare that to Joe Biden’s weakness.”

Could Trump’s cognitive state cost him in the New Hampshire primary?

Maybe. It depends on how large the Independent vote is on Tuesday. If Independents turn out to support Haley and reject Trump, she could win the state. The latest polling has Trump up by 11 points, but that poll has some ominous signs in it for the former president, and was taken before Trump showed the world the condition of his mind.

The only race that people like Rep. Stefanick care about is the race to be Trump’s running mate. There is no low that she won’t sink to if that is what it takes to prove to Donald Trump that she would be an ideal lackey vice president. Instead of confronting the issue head-on, people like Stefanik are making it worse with their embarrassing efforts to spin reality.
https://www.politicususa.com/2024/01/22/elise-stefanik-humiliates-herself-trying-to-spin-trumps-cognitive-decline.html

That’s election denying, reality shifting, university president firing MAGA representative Elise Stefanik, just another one of the extremely toxic politicians to add to the ever growing list of:

Conspiracy Corner
[br]
[br]

Welcome back to our segment that attempts to explain the unexplainable, Conspiracy Corner! Of course conspiracies exist when people simply don’t want to read the article past the headlines and just flat out make shit up. We of course are coming to you live from our underground doomsday shelter from deep within the New Mexico badlands. Undisclosed location, of course! Let me just adjust my trusty tin foil hat for maximum government interference. Ah, there we go! They are trying to read yours and my thoughts after all! You know, folks, it’s an election year. And we don’t need to remind you that there’s some very dark forces at work in this country looking to stir shit up when the time comes to actually cast your vote. You know why can’t hackers ever use their power for good? Why does it always have to be for evil? Case in point: Last week’s primary in New Hampshire was met with highly suspicious robo callers that used Joe Biden’s voice to tell people that they shouldn’t vote in the primaries. Yeah can you believe that shit? But anyway there’s more to this story and it’s as disturbing as it sounds.

A prominent New Hampshire Democrat said the makers of a robocall mimicking the voice of Joe Biden and encouraging Democrats not to vote in the primary on Tuesday should be “prosecuted to the fullest extent” for attempting “an attack on democracy” itself.

“I want them to be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible because this is an attack on democracy,” Kathy Sullivan, a former state party chair, told NBC News, adding that as an attorney, she believes the call could break several laws.

“I’m not going to let it go. I want to know who’s paying for it? Who knew about it? Who benefits?”

As an investigation began, the New Hampshire attorney general, John Formella, said voters should “disregard the contents of this message entirely”.

NBC released a recording of the call.

Yeah BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! This is some seriously evil shit! And AI isn’t just being used to manipulate primary voters in swing states like New Hampshire and Iowa. Oh no, my friends! But in our usual brand of paranoia, we can’t help but think that there will be multiple attempts to gaslight the 2024 election, because there’s way too much at stake. Hell, the future of American democracy hangs in the balance. In fact this is one of those things that could end very badly for all of those involved because the Feds are watching! So it’s not just for political gain, it’s also for telemarketers too, and the last thing we need is telemarketing robo callers becoming self aware.

Michigan Attorney General (AG) Dana Nessel, along with 26 other attorneys general, are urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to strongly restrict usage of artificial intelligence (A.I.) by telemarketers.

In November of 2023, the FCC posted a Notice of Inquiry asking for input on the potential ability of A.I. technology to act as the functional equivalent of a real person and how it fits under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).

In accordance to the TCPA, robocalls are calls made using an artificial or prerecorded voice, the AG’s office said, adding they are generally prohibited unless the calling party obtains the prior express written consent of the consumer.

Nessel said marketers wanting to use A.I. to impersonate a human voice should be required to follow the TCPA’s rules and regulations with respect to “artificial voices,” including obtaining the prior express written consent from consumer targets.

That is a good question and we don’t know the answer! But as far as New Hampshire goes, the AI trickery and deception isn’t just limited to robocallers. In fact if you live in these states, it’s also being used to weaponize and manipulate your social media feeds as well. So as the primaries move from state to state and it’s increasingly looking like the Orange Turdblossom is going to be the eventual nominee for the GOP, you can expect the trickery and insanity to get that much more intense. And even worse is that it’s not going away any time soon.

The Democratic National Committee reorganized its primary cycle to boost South Carolina—where Biden enjoyed a decisive victory in the last primary—and demote New Hampshire, where Biden came in fifth in 2020. The DNC marks South Carolina’s Feb. 3 election as the first officially sanctioned primary, meaning Biden’s doesn’t actually appear on Tuesday’s ballot in New Hampshire.

However, Kathy Sullivan, former New Hampshire Democratic Party chair, has been running a Super PAC to encourage voters to write in Biden’s name anyway to bolster the President. Convincing Biden supporters to stay home could scuttle that effort, and the AI Biden robocall points to Sullivan’s phone number in an apparent jab at the campaign.

“The message appears to have been ‘spoofed’ to falsely show that it had been sent by the treasurer of a political committee that has been supporting the New Hampshire Democratic Presidential Primary write-in efforts for President Biden,” the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office said in a press release Monday. “The message’s content directed recipients who wished to be removed from a calling list to call the number belonging to this person.” The Attorney General’s office said it’s investigating complaints about the calls.

So here’s the thing – if someone tells you that something is a deepfake, chances are very good that it could be used either way. You don’t know! You don’t know! But come on, people, the election is just a mere 10 months away that could decide once and for all if America chooses freedom or fascism. I know which way I’ll be voting! And in case you’re wondering, oh yeah it’s already a given that people are trying to mess with AI. Hell we saw that years ago when we first started this program (see: Idiots #1-22 ) ! Yeah they turned an innocent chat bot into a suicidal Nazi. So if they could do that 8 years ago, imagine the kind of damage they could do today! Things are getting scary out there!

The delivery firm DPD has disabled part of its artificial intelligence (AI) powered online chatbot after a disgruntled customer was able to make it swear and criticise the company.

Musician Ashley Beauchamp, 30, was trying to track down a missing parcel but was having no joy in getting useful information from the chatbot. Fed up, he decided to have some fun instead and began to experiment to find out what the chatbot could do. Beauchamp said this was when the “chaos started”.

To begin with, he asked it to tell him a joke, but he soon progressed to getting the chatbot to write a poem criticising the company.

Beauchamp shared the conversation on X, with the chatbot replying to one message: “Fuck yeah! I’ll do my best to be as helpful as possible, even if it means swearing.”

Then in another instance, the chatbot calls itself a “useless Chatbot that can’t help you”.

I Need A Drink
[br]
[br]

Hey everyone, I don’t know about you, but I could really use a drink!

Of course you know by now that the idea of this segment is that we have some drinks, and while we are drinking, we talk about anything in the news as long as it doesn’t relate to politics. Because, in case you haven’t noticed, there’s a lot of really dark shit in the news right now. There’s war, famine, death, disease, climate change, the very real possibility of a second Trump presidency… all of it is bad. So we feel the only natural solution is to belly up to the bar, grab a glass of your favorite beverage, and escape reality for a few minutes. My sober brothers and sisters, don’t worry, we got you covered too. Just grab a glass of your favorite coffee, tea or energy drink and come get wired with us! Well this week we’re going to talk about a viral drinking craze. And no I’m not talking about when people filled up giant water jugs halfway with vodka and sent themselves to the emergency room. You’ve probably heard about these drinking mugs called Stanely Cups. And no it’s not referring to Lord Stanley’s Cup, the trophy that’s presented at the end of the NHL season. These are just mugs. So tell me bartender, what goes well with a story about cups? A large IPA served in one of these things? OK I’m in for this one! It’s good to switch things up a bit! Well anyway while I’m waiting for my beer, let’s talk about the Stanley Cup craze, because it’s the stuff of pure insanity. And that’s what we’re here for! So how did this whole thing get started and why are these things going viral? Well let’s ask an actual marketing professor!

Up until a couple of weeks ago, you may never have heard of the Stanley tumbler. Or, maybe you know all about it and are amused by everyone else catching up on the latest trend.

The craze has spilled throughout the United States as consumers feel the need to stay hydrated in a trendy, peculiar way. One person following the trend is Diana Perez, a Stanley cup collector. Perez said she has more than 70 of these cups, enough value, she explained, to remodel her kitchen.

“Some people collect cars, some people collect shoes, we collect cups,” said Diana Perez a Stanley cup collector. “My family, they think I’m crazy. They don’t understand why I need more than one.”

Perez said lately, it has been harder to keep growing her collection. The rising popularity has her competing with so many more people who are trying to buy the tumblers at retail. She said she goes up against resellers from the sneaker community who know how to snatch them up quickly.

“Like the newest pink cup. It’s really, really, really cute. I really like it and it’s selling for well over $200, $250, and you know I paid $50 for it,” she said as she showed off what she called her favorite Stanley cup in her collection.

So it’s basically more fashion accessory than the need to stay hydrated? OK then! I’ll show you a real use for these things! Where’s my beer at? Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!! But here’s what we want to know – is this particular craze just for the purpose of staying hydrated? Or is it just the newest fashion accessory to show off so you can get Instagram likes? Of course this is one of those instances where we say that social media is going to kill us all. Because of course like most things that have been insane happening the last few years, the craze originated on Tik Tok. And like most things, it’s not about being environmentally friendly either. But the idea of using an insulated cup isn’t exactly anything new.

Much of its popularity comes from its large size and its ability to keep drinks cold for hours.

Many members of the Shop TODAY team count themselves as Stanley Quencher fans, and you can spot the hydration vessel on plenty of desks throughout our office.

"I have to admit, I was reluctant about giving in to the hype of Stanley Quenchers when they first rose in popularity but now I can’t go a day without them," associate SEO editor Kamari Stewart says. "I have one at home and one in the office and it helps me stay consistent with my water intake. Plus, since it holds so much, it requires less refills throughout the day which is less work on my part."

Personally, I also have two — one to keep at home and one for the office — and I find I drink much more water on days when I have one near, as compared to when I'm using a traditional water bottle.

Though if there is one plus side to this craze, it’s that it’s getting people to drink more water, which you absolutely should. However, we just know that someone is going to make one big ass vodka tonic with it, and speaking of which… ah that’s the stuff! And hey it’s insulated too, which means that my ice won’t melt after long periods of time! Now here’s where it gets weird, and you knew that it was going to. Not just that the Stanley Cup has been the cause of stampedes and riots at Targets nationwide, but check out this story of Roseville, that’s by Sacramento, where this woman stole not just one or two Stanley Cups, but an entire trunk load!

The Stanley cup craze has reached new heights after a woman was arrested for allegedly stealing 65 stainless steel water bottles from a store in California.

According to the Roseville Police Department, a 23-year-old woman was arrested for theft outside Sacramento when police discovered 65 Stanley products in her car worth nearly $2,500. Employees at a retail store on Stanford Ranch Road alerted police after they “saw a woman take a shopping cart full of Stanley water bottles without paying for them,” per the police department’s Facebook post.

“The suspect refused to stop for staff and stuffed her car with the stolen merchandise,” the post read. “An officer spotted the suspect vehicle as it entered Highway 65 from Galleria Blvd and initiated a traffic stop.”

“While Stanley Quenchers are all the rage, we strongly advise against turning to crime to fulfill your hydration habits,” the Roseville Police Department added. Photos shared by police showed the woman’s car trunk and passenger seat filled with a variety of Stanley cups.

OK come on people, get a grip here! The year has only just begun and we’re already getting too full on bullshit here! It’s a cup, made out of aluminum! And there was apparently this story about a 16 year old collector owning $3,000 worth of these things (story is on Fox so we won’t link to it), but seriously, when I was 16, I didn’t own $3,000 worth of anything! The other thing, remember what I said about these cups saving valuable environmental resources? It turns out that was a lie. Because while it’s great that it’s raising awareness about being environmentally conscious and water consumption, it’s also having an effect on the environment because of what it takes to manufacture these things. Yeah there’s always a bad side!

“Now like often is the case, somebody recognizes that [the reusable water bottle] represents a market opportunity and we are off to the races. Rather than having one durable reusable bottle now you have to have six,” he said.

The impacts on the planet of this type of rampant consumerism are now at a point where they can’t be ignored. In fact the environmental impact of consumerism has been talked about since at least 1992 during the Rio Earth Summit in Brazil, Cohen said.

Americans have the second highest ecological footprint per capita after Qatar. One 2022 analysis found that, “if everyone in the world had the same living standard as the average American, we would need over five earths to supply enough resources and process all the waste.”

While the Stanley cup is the latest symbol of mass consumerism pedaled to women today, as Maddox points out there is a gendered aspect to criticisms behind the fixation.

Road To The Primaries Pt. 1
[br]
[br]

Welcome to part 1 of our 4 part series Road To The Primaries! Yes, it’s the rematch that nobody asked for or wanted. And you know what? For the sake of this being a sequel, and all sequels have terrible subtitles, let’s call this one: Road To The Primaries 2024: Primary Harder. Nah, it needs more zing. How about: Road To The Primaries 2024: This Time It’s Personal! Love it! Well now that the dust has settled from the first round of primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire, let’s see where we are at as it is looking increasingly more like Orange Turdblossom is going to be the nominee. Yeah please save your boos for later because it’s going to get worse, believe me! This feels like it’s going to be the longest year ever and we are definitely going to make it somewhat more bearable. But holy shit, did we really need a rematch between Trump and Biden? I mean the last time we were all locked in our homes and Biden couldn’t go out in public. And Trump held rallies where people died after attending. Yeah good times! But that is not going to happen in the 2024 election, oh no, we’re past COVID and the kid gloves are coming off! So what did we learn in Iowa? Well for one thing we learned who still supports Trump after all of the shit he's put us through.

As expected, former President Donald Trump was the clear winner of the Iowa Caucuses with a landslide victory on Monday night. The result is the first step towards setting up a rematch with President Joe Biden in November.

The former president dominated in the state where the Republican electorate is deeply conservative, taking over 50% of the vote and tightening his hold over the party. In the hours after his overwhelming victory, the BBC spoke to voters across the political spectrum and asked them what they made of Mr Trump's electoral return.

While some Republicans - seemingly the majority of the party based off the Iowa results - think Mr Trump is the only one who can "save this nation", others fear the billionaire will lose once again to President Biden in the presidential election.

As for Democrats, some find it hard to imagine the majority of Americans would choose "to go back to chaos" and elect Mr Trump.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-67994816

Yeah not this year for sure! And here’s the really ironic and fucked up thing – Trump’s base are white evangelical males. Yes, the godliest among us support the least godly man that’s ever dared to call himself a leader. You know, when we first started this program, we compared Trump to the Joker from the Dark Knight. He’s an agent of chaos. He took plans and turned them on themselves. He peeled back the layers and showed you who really supports the GOP – and they’re as big of assholes as he is. But the real takeaway here is that the Evangelicals showed the world who they really are.

Despite the best efforts of the mainstream media to portray the Republican Iowa caucus as a real competition between Donald Trump, former Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, and Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, the result was exactly what anyone reading the polls expected: A massive win for Trump. It usually takes at least an hour to call the Iowa caucus, but the state was called by the Associated Press in fewer than 40 minutes after the caucuses began. Despite all the hype about Haley's last-minute gains, or the possibility that the weather might tilt the outcome (Monday's was the coldest caucus ever), the result was what all statistical odds showed: Trump walked away with it. He more than doubled the support he got in the Hawkeye State in 2016's caucus.

....(snip)....

Over the past 8 years, we've all watched as evangelicals have grown ever more fanatical in their love of Trump, a thrice-married adulterer who bragged about committing sexual assault. Still, many pundits cling to this fantasy that American evangelicals are morally upright people who actually mean all that talk about chastity, charity, and Christian values. It was always a silly notion, of course, as the evangelical movement has long shown itself more interested in right-wing politics than in feeding the poor and healing the sick. But the romantic fantasy about an American heartland replete with simple but good people had powerful sway over the imaginations of the chattering class.

....(snip)....

Forget Jesus. The real lord of the evangelical movement has shown his grimacing orange face to the world, and it is a nasty one. There's a temptation among pundits, who want to retain their view of the humble Iowa evangelical, to write this alliance between Trump and the Christian right as purely transactional: He gets votes, they get their anti-choice/anti-gay policies so long as they just ignore the stuff they supposedly don't like about Trump.
https://www.salon.com/2024/01/16/with-donald-iowa-landslide-evangelicals-reveal-they-really-are/

And if there’s one thing that we learned from the New Hampshire primary is that the competition against Trump are dropping out like flies because they know they can’t touch him. Just look at Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley – both vocal opponents of Trump, they dropped out and endorsed him like the things he said are no big deal. Nothing to see here! Please disperse! And it looks like the billionaires and oligarchs and other undesirable assholes that be want this conflict, because they profit while America suffers. And for that they can go get fucked.

Donald Trump has won New Hampshire’s GOP primary, delivering a setback to rival Nikki Haley, who is running out of time to establish herself as a viable alternative to him.

It was his second straight victory in his quest for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. He won Iowa’s leadoff caucuses by 30 percentage points.

Allies of President Joe Biden, meanwhile, are hoping their write-in campaign on the Democratic side is successful. Polls closed statewide at 8 p.m.

Look, here’s what is so troubling about this. Trump is in the news 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and all of it is bad. What really bothers us here is that these primaries more than any other seem like they’re faker than fake. Like the undesirables that be wanted this from the beginning, because they’re going to attempt to steal the election like they did in 2000 and in 2016. It’s not going away any time soon. But there was one small gleam of hope that maybe, just maybe we’ll be able to outsmart Fox and finish Trump once and for all this year. But again we have independent thoughts here, and they’re what the undesirables that be don’t like.
President Biden won the New Hampshire Democratic primary on Tuesday, an unusual race that he skipped after his party changed its rules in favor of seeing South Carolina hold the first nominating contest of the year.

As a result, Biden wasn't on the printed ballot. But Biden won regardless, according to a race call by The Associated Press.

The victory comes after a grassroots campaign urged Democrats to write in his name and a super PAC raised about $1.5 million to back the effort.

The outcome is more symbolic than anything. The Democratic National Committee broke with tradition this year and chose South Carolina to hold its first primary of the year, on Feb. 3. But New Hampshire has a law requiring it to go first, so it went ahead with its vote anyway.

As a result of the dispute, New Hampshire's delegates won't be seated at the Democratic National Convention in August, and the results won't count toward Biden's official nomination.
