(Slate) The Senates long-in-the-works border security and Ukraine aid bill still has not been released, but House Speaker Mike Johnson knows he is firmly against it. So against it, in fact, that hes speaking about the future bill as already deceased.
In a letter to colleagues last Friday, Johnson wrote, The Senate appears unable to reach any agreement. (This was wishful thinking on his part; Senate negotiators hope to release their agreement this week.) If rumors about the contents of the draft proposal are true, Johnson continued, it would have been dead on arrival in the House anyway.
Johnson further trashed the proposal in a House GOP meeting Tuesday morning, saying that it had no way forward or that its not going anywhere, according to members in the room. Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has threatened to oust Johnson should he accede to the deal, was pleased with what she heard.
I just heard Speaker Johnson saying its absolutely dead, which is what I wanted to hear, Greene told CNN. As a matter of fact, he said so clear, I dont know why people keep asking me about it, because as it stands right now, theres no way forward. ..............(more)

(361 posts)sadly, but I also think this is a great set up for Dems and Senate Republicans who want MAGA gone.
If Senate passes the bill, then the pressure will be huge against MAGA house Republicons.
President Biden will hammer it home until the last vote is cast.
I see this as a set up and great opportunity for Dems.
"We passed what you wanted, all you have to do is pass it too. Why are you not? Then YOU are weak on border security."
It'll be gold imo.
Best wishes all. Hang on, this year will be like 1860 politics. Hang in there, we're going to win but it's going to be ugly.

(17,151 posts)Since the House already passed it, Johnson couldn't do anything to stop the Senate from passing it into law. It would make it more difficult for the Republicans to claim the issue any longer.

(114,615 posts)I suppose nobody thinks getting someone else in for only a year is a bad idea, but that's half the term of this Congress and they had to total hosers the first year, why not keep trying?
By this time, they know who the sprinkling of reasonable Republicans are, the ones who are wrong about nearly everything but care about the country more than the "yay team" paradigm of the Idiot Caucus.
