(57,052 posts)After the Civil War, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it was, in fact, illegal for states to secede from the union. That means there is no approved process for a state to form its own nation.

They are actors following a script, because the formula has been proven successful with R voters.

(2,923 posts)Comer for one, he is a real dumbass.
Boebert, of course.
There is a marked difference between most R senators and the whole GOP house.
They really are not sending their best to the house, but the pickings are slim too.

(8,241 posts)In 2009, then-Gov. Rick Perry made national headlines for jokingly suggesting that Texas might secede.
In June 2022, the Texas State Republican Convention adopted a platform urging the Legislature to put a referendum before the people of Texas in November 2023 to determine whether or not the State of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation.
And in 2023, former state Rep. Bryan Slaton filed a resolution seeking an election to allow Texas voters to decide whether to leave the United States.
Despite perennial talk of another secession, the law is clear that Texas may not leave the union.

(46,512 posts)That she has no clue as to how that sounds and is a non-starter for the USA, having fought a civil war over secession, she should just quit. That will sink her candidacy at some point. Are they all just as dumb as Trump?

(6,867 posts)15 military bases with over 164 thousand personnel (as of 9/2017) and about $100 billion in economic impact.
And that's just one aspect of the financial disaster they would go through.
On the other hand, Texas has 25 Republican and 13 Democrat US House members, and 2 Republican Senators. Losing that would be a big positive for the rest of the nation.

(14,626 posts)Our federation is unsustainable. There is no common ground. One of the two major parties is an overtly fascist party intending to implement authoritarian one party rule. There is no middle ground between authoritarianism and democratic liberalism.
Given a choice between fascism and separation, Ill take separation. I think, realistically that is where we are.

"It was the War of Democratic Party Aggression!"
Remember, Nikki,, when Texas is devastated, it might behoove the federal government to truly make peace with the Mexican government of past aggression and let them have the whole state back - provided of course, that immigrants would be given free property throughout Texas.
