Hate to sound like an old fuck, but Billy Joel and Joni Mitchell can write rings around the newer artists.
Now, get off my lawn.

Yeah, as we're layin' in the darkness

took him two years to write those lyrics? two years for that catchy tune? (
couldn't think of anything else?
yes, i know, i'm heartless.

(29,705 posts)One of the reasons I have never cottoned to him is that I think his lyrics are pretty second rate and contrived. The lyrics to "Piano Man" drive me crazy.
(Also I know it's a song, with the poetic license that implies, but it's "lyin'", not "layin'"
.

(12,165 posts)And yeah, you do sound like an old man.
Just FYI, it's "Joni Mitchell".

(12,165 posts)PS. At least you have "Joni" right in the edited post. Now do "Mitchell".

(3,751 posts)I love Taylor Swift, her energy, her positivity, her activism. She seems like a genuinely great person, but when I listen to her lyrics Im like, meh? Cant hold a candle to Joni. Just a couple quick grabs off the web:
Taylor: The skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to f--- this up
Joni: Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
Taylor: Lovelorn and nobody knows / Love thorns all over this rose / I'll pay the price, you won't"
Joni: Downtown
My darling dime store thief
In the War of Independence
Rock 'n Roll rang as sweet as victory
Under neon signs
A girl was in bloom
And a woman was fading
In a suburban room
(From In France They Kiss on Main Street). My God, I hated to stop after one verse! That entire song is like a stream of conscious meditation on her wild young rock and roll years. And the music its set to!
Taylors got talent, no doubt, but Joni is the Queen, and always will be!

Art is a matter of taste.
I think Artists stand on their own as individuals. Thats why they are artists.
