No real details since it's the Royals.
Went in last week re: enlarged prostate and previously diagnosed benign cancer. During the course of treatment, they found something else, undisclosed but requiring more substantive immediate treatment. Sounds like he's starting treatments (chemo?) today.
I'm not a big royals fan and really really not a fan of Charles at all...and still...wish him well in this fight.

(31,761 posts)Yeah, it must have been awful having to tolerate all the opulence, the army of domestic servants, taxpayer-funded parades, celebrations and ceremonies and millions of people feeling customarily obligated to listen as he droned on endlessly for decades . . .
I am sorry he has cancer but not one little iota more than I am for anyone else, and admittedly perhaps a bit less because of the obscene amount of resources available to him at the expense of others.
Okay. I'll jump back off my soap box now.

As for his diagnosis, I am affected exactly as deeply as he would be affected if I received similar news.

(31,761 posts)incredibly jaded from watching way too many older men and women give up and die in the face of such diagnosis because they are not valued and they do not have the means, the resources, their own staff etc. to deal with it. Here we have a case of a single man of no REAL consequence who has enjoyed massively disproportionate and inflated importance from BIRTH and all the way through his life.
Someone else on this thread said they feel exactly the same amount of sympathy Charles would feel upon hearing that they had received the same diagnosis. In other words, little and not for long. I agree with that and find it fair.
Again, It was nothing against you in any way, at all.

(12,062 posts)Despite the trappings, he had little to no choice in how his life would unfold. He was told where to go to school, what to do for work, and even who to marry (and not marry). His only real choice would have been to abdicate and then be ostracized by his family and a nation. Not fun, either.
I don't think all that luxury pays him back for what amounts to a stolen life. I don't envy the man.
Monarchy is a form of abuse. Needs to be abolished.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

(13,850 posts)and I hope he can recover and go into remission.
But I agree with the rest. That people think it's MORE sad bc he had to wait to become King... when he lived a life of luxury at the expense of British taxpayers all because of who he was born to... it starts to make me roll my eyes a bit.
I truly hope he recovers and makes amends with his prodigal son. Those are human sorrows that many of us can understand. Illness and family estrangement. He has the best doctors and the best treatment at his disposal, and he's lucky for that.

(12,285 posts)Because this part of the "royal" lineage is technically only royal to maintain the facade of the monarchy. When Queen Anne died in 1714 she had no viable heirs so a German elector, named George Louis, from Hanover assumed the throne.
The name "Windsor" is made up because German sounding names fell out of fashion after WWI.
The more you know...
muriel_volestrangler
(106,212 posts)Anne, of course, did have closer living relations - notably her half-brother James, aka "the Old Pretender", but he was Catholic, and the line of succession was changed to make her distant (but reliably Protestant) cousin George her heir.
angrychair
(12,285 posts)Like I said "viable". While most European royal families are connected in one way or another, there were no visible (read acceptable) English heirs to Queen Anne.
I just find the history of some of this stuff both fascinating and crazy odd. They put so much into these folks but really their genetics are a trash can of hundreds of years of inbreeding and decadence.

(10,969 posts)If it's unrelated to the prostate, I'd reckon bladder. It's something that would be easily spotted during that kind of procedure since both organs chill together.
And if that's the case, they might have caught it relatively early.
Depends when they found it. If during procedure, I'd go bladder. But if it showed up in a scan, could be anything.

(14,272 posts)I wouldn't fault him if he stepped aside soon. Being unwell is a huge energy drain.
On the plus side, William has also prepared and he and his wife are very active in duties and service. They would easily step into their future roles sooner if needed. In fact, their appeal eclipses King Charles and Queen Camilla.
I am Canadian born and so Queen Elizabeth was queen my whole life. Even here as a U.S. citizen I paid attention--until she died. I felt a loss. She really was a remarkable monarch.
Best to you and happy Valentine's week!

(22,590 posts)This is a lousy thing to happen to anyone, no matter their station in life. I'm sure he'll have the best of care, and he won't have any worries about paying for it. Of course the same could be said for even the lowliest citizen of his country, since health care is free to all in the UK. (Envious? Who, me?) But he will certainly have the widest possible range of options for treatment.
As an American, I don't really have an opinion about whether the UK or any other country should have a monarchy. Not my country, not my business. It frankly seems a bit crass to me to use this news as a springboard to post an anti-monarchy rant. Whatever one may think of the system into which Charles and other royals were born, they are human beings (very privileged ones, but humans nonetheless), and this is news nobody wants to get. I think we would all do well to remember that.
I wish him all the best.

(53,194 posts)BUCKINGHAM PALACE (Spurious News Network) -- The Royal Press Secretary today announced that while King Charles is recovering from cancer he will be relieved of his pubic duties.
In response, the Queen announced that the Royal Proofreader and the Keeper of the Royal Spelling Checker are to be immediately cast into the dungeon.

(661 posts)Pope Bendict abdicated in 2013 at the age of 83.
It almost seems to be a trend.
I could see Charles deciding he could not fulfil his duties and abdicating to enjoy a retirement or at least a peaceful last days. He does not appear to enjoy being King that much, especially as the face/voice of a conservative government with which he has many political disagreements.
He might go for a regency instead with responsibility shared by his wife and eldest son.
Just my thoughts.

(661 posts)So, four European monarchs abdicating in their 70's and 80's in the last ten years.
It is a trend. One that QE2 was bucking.
I think that makes it more likely that Charles will abdicate if his health continues to be a problem. He has already lasted longer on the throne than his great-uncle and has secured his place in history as a king.
peggysue2
(12,533 posts)But Its not lost on me that Charles has been in the wings waiting to be King his entire adult life. Queen Elizabeth lived long and well and decided not to relinquish the Crown even in advanced age.
Now, less than a year after his coronation, Charles is diagnosed with cancer of . . . What? We might assume the prostate but we really dont know nor do we know the stage of said cancer.
Even to me, that seems royally unfair.
Bad luck? Karma? I dont know but an astounding, even shocking turn of events.
