General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWell, today was the opposite of a slow news day
1) House Republicans killed their own border deal and handed Biden a political club that he can now beat them with, potentially reversing his fortunes in the immigration debate.
2) A federal appeals court ruled that citizen Trump is not immune from prosecution.
3) In New York, Judge Engoron sent signals that the Trump fraud trial is going to get even worse for Trump.
4) The GOP House failed to impeach Sec. Mayorkas...
5) ...and then also failed to pass a standalone Israel aid bill, making Speaker Johnson look completely incompetent.
6) News broke that there will be no charges in the Biden classified documents case.
Did I miss anything?

(17,728 posts)you could add that the mother of the Oxford High school shooter was found guilty of manslaughter. It now sets a precedent for parents of children who have access to guns who commit murder with those guns can and will be held liable for any deaths. The father is due to have his trial soon also.

(55,521 posts)I have been following this story and today's news makes me thrilled. I only wish that this news would bet to the ears of those gun owners who may find themselves in the same position, legally. This is a BIG deal! Parents being held responsible for their actions could apply to a lot of legal cases in the future. This sets an important precedent.

If somehow the bill survives a filibuster and passes, then all eyes will be on MAGA Mike, and depending on how many Dem Nos there are, there would only need to be a few GOP defections to pass the bill.
There are 18 GOP reps from districts that went to Biden in 2020

Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel will resign her post soon, according to a report published by the New York Times on Tuesday night.
Two sources familiar with McDaniels plans said she intends to step down shortly after the Feb. 24 Republican South Carolina primary.

(51,633 posts)JPL statement issued on Feb. 6, 2024:
After exhausting all other measures to adjust to a lower budget from NASA, and in the absence of an FY24 appropriation from Congress, we have had to make the difficult decision to reduce the JPL workforce through layoffs. JPL staff has been advised that the workforce reduction will affect approximately 530 of our colleagues, an impact of about 8%, plus approximately 40 additional members of our contractor workforce. The impacts will occur across both technical and support areas of the Lab. These are painful but necessary adjustments that will enable us to adhere to our budget allocation while continuing our important work for NASA and our nation.
