Sam Altman bragged today about how many words OpenAI generates. He got less applause than he expected.

And btw, he's now trying to raise $7 TRILLION for more AI chips - GPUs - to power OpenAI and his mad ambitions: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100218666304 .

Today, on Twitter:

Sam Altman
@sama

openai now generates about 100 billion words per day.

all people on earth generate about 100 trillion words per day.

So proud of himself, that his company is already supposedly generating 1/1,000 of the words generated on the planet.

Some of the responses:

now give me 7 trillion dollars and i will turn the 100 billion words/day to 100 trillion words/day

How many of those words are in AI hallucinations (I.e., factually incorrect statements)?

We no longer speak, people, we generate content.

All 100 trillion words in the second category represent thought.
How many of the 100 billion words in the first group do, Sam?

It's not a competition Sam

But it obviously is for him.

But we're all supposed to be so dazzled by AI tricks controlled by Big Tech that we don't notice what's being stolen from us.

Yep, you nailed it. Tragicomedy.

the one AI model that rules them all.

As some of the replies on Twitter pointed out, that comparison is an element in his pitch for trillions in funding.

That's the heart of addiction. It's almost as if technocratic capitalists want the consumer addicted to AI, incapable of critical thought.

The quality of the content is what matters to me the most. As any teacher would say, a 1000-word essay is only as good as the content.

Why should I care when climate change and the indickables have flooded the GOP leadership and raised the level of toxicity to unsafe levels among other things, what is this really going to do for the people of earth, the majority of which are not doing well?

Really just sick of all of it to the point of depression overload once I add IRL issues.

I'm very hopeful about the LLMs. We've already been living with a tremendous problem of "artificially magnified natural intelligence." Ignoramuses, jerks, lost people, narcissists, criminals, etc., have been Googling and TikToking and tweeting and Facebooking us all over the place. They are low- or negative-value natural intelligences with (unfortunately for everyone) big transmission weapons. ChatGPT is a better contributor to human wellbeing than them by a long shot.
