I am watching because I like football. About 100 million other Americans are watching too. But that means a lot of people are not watching. This is all fine, free country and all. What people enjoy is up to them. Sometimes it comes up in conversation and people will say they are watching or not. It's all good.
But then there are those people who feel they must announce in public or social media that THEY ARE NOT WATCHING THE GAME, usually adding how they will be reading a book or seeing an art film. The condescension is palpable.
Not sure why this disdain is reserved for football or why they are so proud of themselves, but my thought is usually, go fuck yourself you sanctimonious blowhard.
Rant ended.
For those who have replied to explain why you don't watch. I think you missed the entire point of my post.

Years ago my daughter was a cheerleader. She led us to watch her high school team win NY State. Fun to get to know the players and watch them perform a miracle. So I get that's what it's like for you guys who really know your stuff.
My daughter also introduced me to Taylor Swift even before the cheerleading years. So how could I miss this? And like the high school games, I'll enjoy the football too. I don't mean to compare the caliber of play but all athletes who can deliver an oblong ball 30 yards or more to the right person running at breakneck speed while in danger of attack is a miracle to me. My husband will happily explain who's who on the field.

I dont care what someones tastes or preferences are. Sports as a subject is a very complex psychological issue for the vast number of people, since virtually everyone has been subjected to the people, rules, limitations, and role-playing of sports. One way or another, for good or evil, sports has played with our minds.

At least not always. I think for some of us it's just a weird feeling to see what *feels* like the whole country losing its shit over something that you're not interested in.
I know it's not really the whole country, but it can feel that way because of all the hype. And speaking as a person who doesn't actively hate football but is just not that into it, all that hype can get pretty tiresome. I don't have anything against football or football fans, but too much of anything can get tiresome.
In response to this feeling of being bombarded by Superbowl stuff some people feel an urge to pipe up and point out that "Hey, guess what? Not everyone is into this! Some of us are actually tired of hearing about it!" It can feel downright refreshing to say, "I'm not watching the Superbowl" and hear others say "I'm not, either." It's nice to know you're not the only one!
There may be a tinge of self-righteousness for some in these "No Superbowl for me!" proclamations, but I don't think that's true for most of us non-Superbowl fans." Imo, most of us are just tired of the whole thing and want to feel seen.
LisaM
(29,634 posts)If I post on Facebook about the game and someone goes on my wall and says she or he won't be watching, then it comes off as self-righteous. If someone asked you directly which team you wanted and you politely say you aren't interested,. that's different.
The worst are the people who disdainfully say they don't watch "sportsball". No longer funny or original and clearly designed to mock someone else's interest (they say it for baseball and basketball and soccer, too, believe me, I have heard it all).

(9,148 posts)Theres SO MUCH hype over one stupid game. It reminds me of the Christmas build up there is no way for Jews, Muslims, atheists, etc. to just tune it all out. I try to tune out all the endless dumb sportsing talk, but its impossible to avoid it entirely.
Ive had a visceral negative reaction to football since I was a little girl and my dad would watch games with the volume way up and impose that shit on my mom and sister and me. Even the sound of helmets clashing made me feel a little queasy.
Yeah, yeah, I can see your eye roll and tiny violin from here I dont expect you to care; Im explaining how football feels a bit like a psychological invasion to a lot of us, especially women.
