(6,439 posts)But will that group lose its influence? I suspect the MAGAs will get back in line with more traditional Republicans (if there are any left) because if they don't they will not win very many elections.

(13,560 posts)Trump is not the force behind Christian Nationalism, so if he loses nothing really changes there. People like Leonard Leo, and many organizations pump lots of money into their lies and campaigns to criminalize abortion and just being LGBTQ+. Those who are not Republican extremists who want to see the US ruled as a theocracy will leave the party, and the extremists will only get worse. As just one example, I think of a group calling the selves the Abortion Abolitionists, who have introduced laws to punish any woman who has an abortion for any reason with prosecution and the death penalty. Women who have a miscarriage at home would be hauled into court to prove that it was natural and punished if they could not.
Extremism only works to a certain point, and I do not think that the Christian Nationalists will achieve their goals. But to prevent that, its vitally important for Democrats to hold the presidency and the Senate to prevent hundreds more judges like Matthew Kacsmaryk (the Texas judge ruling that the FDA could not approve the abortion drugs) from being appointed, judges who try to use the courts to turn their religious views into law.

Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)....if we can obliterate the republican party for good, then the Democratic party can take the most right-leaning spot by staying what it is, and other, more progressive parties can move into place to the left of us, creating a more compassionate, diverse, fair, and equitable nation overall!
A win-win!

(115,186 posts)Demographics make it inevitable
We have to worry about religiosity and young men being radicalized. Otherwise we should be heading toward the expected and predicted democratic majority that has been predicted for decades.
Then we can work on pushing the Overton window back toward some semblance of sanity.
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
