https://edition.cnn.com/2024/02/14/politics/house-intel-chairman-serious-national-security-threat/index.htmlHouse Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner has made intelligence around a serious national security threat available to all members of Congress to review. Two sources familiar with the matter and a US official tell CNN the threat is related to Russia.
Multiple sources familiar with the intelligence characterized the intelligence as very sensitive.
Earlier Wednesday, Turner sent his Congressional colleagues a letter saying the urgent matter is with regard to a destabilizing foreign military capability.
One of the sources who has seen the intelligence confirmed that it is, in fact, a highly concerning and destabilizing Russian capability that we were recently made aware of.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said he had personally reached out to set a meeting with top lawmakers on national security committees before Turner warned publicly of what he termed the serious national security threat.
I reached out earlier this week to the Gang of Eight to offer myself for up for a personal briefing to the Gang of Eight and, in fact, we scheduled a briefing for the for House members of the Gang of Eight tomorrow, Sullivan said from the White House. Thats been on the books. So I am a bit surprised that Congressman Turner came out publicly today in advance of a meeting on the books for me to go sit with him alongside our intelligence and defense professionals tomorrow.
Sullivan said he remained focused on sitting down with Turner on Thursday for the meeting.
He declined to elaborate on the nature of the threat.
Im not in a position to say anything further from this podium at this time, he said.

(8,435 posts)...I just want to make it clear that I do not think any republican in office today is capable of being legitimate on any topic, I understand you feel differently.
Also, I do not think I misrepresented that.
I strongly suspect any and every action or statement by republican turner is based entirely on self-interest, causing damage to our nation and our citizens, and illegitimately retaining power for the republican party, including however he may be exploiting the Ukraine funding issue.

(45,021 posts)It seems he's trying to get out ahead of some news for some reason. Clearly he's not on the same page as the Biden team. I do apppreciate his support for Ukraine, but it might be more helpful if he was putting maximum pressure on the Speaker rather than ineffectively tweeting stuff.

(21,408 posts)Ukraine seems to have a new strategy, or increasing a strategy of attacking Russian military, fuel, ammunition targets deep inside Russia. If Ukraine takes the war deep into Russia, Putin must be worried about how long he can remain in power.
Just a wild guess.

(31,907 posts)Seriously - there may indeed be a major national security risk - but this guy isn't the person the world needs to hear it from. In the meantime, we are all now stewing on it for the next 24 hours.
If President Biden, VP Harris, a trusted member of the President's Cabinet, Schumer, or Jeffries tell us -
Then I'll get all up in arms.
For all I know the threat is the same as it was in 2016 and 2020 - Russian interference in the election in favor of Trump.
