Here Are the Most, Least Educated States in America

per WalletHub, which looked at the data to see which states offer more in the way of education. The site examined 18 metrics in two main categories: educational attainment, which looks at the share of adults 25 and older who have a high school diploma and various levels of college education; and quality of education—think blue-ribbon schools per capita, graduation rates for public high schools, and racial and gender gaps in educational attainment, among other factors. Here, the top and bottom 10:

Most educated

Massachusetts (No. 1 in both "Educational Attainment," "Quality of Education" categories)
Vermont
Maryland
Connecticut
Colorado
Virginia
New Jersey
New Hampshire
Minnesota
Washington

Least educated
Texas
New Mexico (last in "Quality of Education" category)
Kentucky
Nevada
Alabama
Oklahoma
Arkansas
Louisiana
Mississippi
West Virginia (last in "Educational Attainment" category)

And while the public schools here leave a lot to be desired, thanks to the presence of Los Alamos National Labs, Sandia National Labs, UNM, NMSU, there are a lot of well educated persons here doing a lot. It's also important that in this state there are a LOT of recent immigrants from Central or South America, who don't speak English, who don't have a clue about the importance of finishing grade school, let alone high school. Despite that, this state does, in my opinion, a remarkable job of educating new students, all students.

Albuquerque has some very good high schools (Albuquerque Academy-private, and public schools Sandia, La Cueva, El Dorado.)

whether its the dozen or so native languages or Spanish. The first three years are spent teaching the dominant language of the country, if not the state as a whole.

Given that, I think the schools are doing a fantastic job here. Then again, I lived in a largely immigrant pocket in Boston, where the schools were labeled "underperforming" for the same damned reason. They weren't unless you were blinded by cultural bias.

What might be dragging the state down is also the number of kids who quit at 16 to work on the family ranch. It's a low population, largely agricultural state.

No one should be in awe of Massachusetts, either. I knew too many people there who were dumb as stumps.
