The patriarch of a right-wing Canadian family of eight had just about enough of the gay people existing in his country. We didn't feel safe for our children there in the future anymore. There's a lot of left-wing ideology, LGBTQ, trans, just a lot of things that we don't agree with that they teach there now, and we wanted to get away from that for our children.
Yeah, if theres one place thats just not safe for kids, its Canada. Russia would be sooo much safer.
So mom and dad sold everything they had to move to sunny Russia to raise their kids in orthodox values. They also gladly took donations on their social media platform from fellow right-wingers so they could live in Putins wonderland. They did all of this just three weeks ago, and Russian officials assured them that they would work with them to get them established, and even help them get a farm. Long story short, they lived happily ever after.
Except they didnt.
First off, the Russian bank where they moved their funds immediately froze their assets. The amount of money seemed suspicious, as I guess it would since most Russians outside of Putins circle are dirt poor. As a result, the family doesnt have money to live on, and those nice Russian officials disappeared.

But if you lie, who cares? Maybe it was all the false reporting that was responsible for convincing the family of eight to jump in both feet.

They're not tolerated in Russia. Oh, they exist, but they're so hidden in their closets they don't dare utter a syllable in their defense. Russia is like that. Dissent will not be tolerated.
I hope he doesn't have any complaints about anything because complaints aren't tolerated either. They don't tolerate much in Russia, except following the prescribed dictatorial orders, that is.
I hope this small-minded bigot likes all of the alcoholics which will be such a fine example for his children to follow. Alcoholism is rampant in Russia, because everything is so bleak and hopeless for the vast majority in Russia.

(5,072 posts)as belief in religion is contrary to the doctrine of glorious revolution where the workers throw off the bonds of repressive institutions including the church (religion is the opiate of the masses, etc). So he's moved to a country with a 90 year history of actively suppressing religion hoping to find a Christian paradise. D'oh.
And yes, Russia isn't a communist country any more but culturally it is still working through the repercussions of church attendance being effectively banned for generations.
As a side note, when I taught in China our school threw a Halloween party where all the teachers had to dress up and lead activities. I went as a fortune teller and was later told off by the school because fortune telling is illegal in China as something that promotes superstition.
So yeah, wake up and taste the freedom!
Rhiannon12866
(249,142 posts)And, as I said, there were so many churches, furnished with so much gold, but they mainly served as museums and tourist venues - including St. Basil's (which we couldn't visit since there was work being done on it at the time), but we saw it at the foot of The Kremlin.
And we were there in September, the first day of school, and we saw young students and their parents visiting there since it was a tradition for children to have their pictures taken next to St. Basil's to mark the start of the school year, at least that's what we were told.
And when I saw all that gold, both in churches and museums (the Armory in the Kremlin), I began to understand what sparked te Russian Revolution.

to a country that is not only extremely dangerous, but one in which theyre completely helpless. Imagine theyd moved to Poland, which is as anti-gay as Russia is. Since the Polish language uses basically the same alphabet as English does - there are extra letters in it and a Polish Scrabble set has A LOT of Zs in it, but the base 26 letters are the same - they could have at least read street signs and food labels. But Russia uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which is completely different. They cant even buy a can of beans for dinner if there isnt a picture of beans on the label.

First of all there's Putin and his dictatorship.
Secondly, Russia is waging an unjust war against another nation, meaning all sorts of negative things can happen at any time (like their money being frozen/stolen probably).
Thirdly, sanctions are already in play and more are to come because of Navalny's death.
There's the language thing, and a myriad of hundreds of other reasons to look elsewhere.
