Hillary Clinton: Youth 'woefully uninformed' on Israeli-Palestinian conflict

While speaking alongside Deborah Lipstadt, the US special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism at the Munich Security Conference, Hillary Clinton told her audience that young people in America are “woefully uninformed” about antisemitism and the Holocaust, while denouncing its rise in the United States.

Clinton provided an example while she was speaking at a panel discussing conflict-related sexual violence. “Last week, we had three panels about Ukraine, and they were superb. They went off without a hitch. We learned a lot and were challenged,” she began. While speaking at the panel discussing conflict-related sexual violence, there were protests. The panel discussed sexual violence in Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Israel.

“You just have to ask yourself how you could have an event focused on using rape as a tactic of war against women and girls, which is [used] in conflict across the world, and you include the most recent horrendous example out of Israel, and that brings out the protesters,” Clinton said.

She commented that there is an “invidious strain of antisemitism that has never gone away…that has been poking its head up for quite some time now.”

Both of those things definitely play a role. It's worth noting, also, that those who are uninformed are especially vulnerable to misinformation. Someone who is well-versed on any topic is in a much better position to recognize misinformation when it rears its ugly head.

Personally, I think that an understanding of antisemitism in general and the holocaust in particular (including its impact on those who founded the modern state of Israel) is vital to anyone trying to make sense of the country's history, let alone what's going on now. The complete lack of such an understanding leaves people ripe for forming simplistic opinions amd missing many important nuances.

The person who spam posts Israel hate stories every day, the person who said Hamas were freedom fighters like Mandela, the numerous anti semites who have been banned since Oct 7 have been mostly adults, some of them senior adults who should know better.

own age. And I’m old — are especially, but not exclusively, uninformed. If it didn’t happen in their lifetime, it didn’t happen. The youth of every era are guilty of that kind of thinking. Older folks remember *something*. Some attack on Israel. Some bus bombing. Some suicide attack. The change in relations between Gazans and Israelis after intense terror attacks.

I am old enough to remember the founding of the State of Israel. I remember the UN vote. And while I didn’t follow events closely, I’m aware of most that made headline news over the past 75 years. The “youth” are not.

They like their pied pipers more than facts of the world or even consistency in their own grievances. Clinton is exactly right -- you have to ask yourself.

“You just have to ask yourself how you could have an event focused on using rape as a tactic of war against women and girls, which is [used] in conflict across the world, and you include the most recent horrendous example out of Israel, and that brings out the protesters,” Clinton said.

... by the number of young people who think the Israeli Jews invaded a country called "Palestine" and took the land by Force from the peaceful people living there. I shit you not. They know literally nothing about the history of that region, the politics of the Palestinian Mslims prior to the 47-48 war, the explusion of Jews from Arab countries (or the history of Pogroms in Europe, for that matter) or the persistent existential threats to Jews in the region. They believe some faked up bullshit about the Jews being the uncontested aggressors.

around 84,000 Jews there, 140 years ago, only 24,000.

There also is an overwhelming lack of historical Jewish control (on balance) of Jerusalem and much of the surrounding area as the last 4+ millennia rolled by.

That headline kind of comes across as chiding the youth. I know, I know, she wasn't really chiding them, but it can be seen that way and we shouldn't turn off the youth we need more than many other blocs due to their sheer numbers alone.

Besides, Republicans already occupy that lane ("Youth are too stupid to vote responsibly!" ) pretty decisively. We need to find ways to reach them, lest they decide BOTH parties are irrelevant and leave the process altogether.

It was a response to the actual youth displaying actual ignorance of antisemitism. This is a bad thing.

It is extremely unlikely that excusing this bad thing, or ignoring it, will lead to increased voter activity among this demographic group. They are adults, and they have many opportunities to inform themselves and each other about antisemitism. If they don't take advantage of these opportunities, they have made a decision to remain uninformed.

Some things are not to be tolerated. Just as we don't want racists youth to be associated with the Democratic Party, we don't want any association with antisemites either.

Hillary's remark was about young people being ignorant of antisemitism and Holocaust.

You appear to make a connection between the two which Hillary didn't.

“You just have to ask yourself how you could have an event focused on using rape as a tactic of war against women and girls, which is [used] in conflict across the world, and you include the most recent horrendous example out of Israel, and that brings out the protesters,”

Have you ever asked yourself this?
