(I am a retired mental health professional).
I conducted court ordered psych evaluations for those sitting in jail for various crimes.
Many were sexual offenders.

Some of them had been abused themselves.
Or seriously neglected, yes some had mother issues.
Or seriously immature and consensual sex was frightening on some level.
Or angry at women for various reasons.
Some liked the game of the crime.
And the power trip.
Or pretended the woman came on to them.

It was a mixed bag. Sometimes the childhood stories were quite sad.

The child sexual offenders were difficult for me.
Hearing grown men say the three year they had raped, asked for it.

After a couple of years of this, I asked to move to other clinic duties.
It was not something I wanted to do long term.

I of course stayed professional and wrote the court reports in a neutral clinical way.
The courts and judges wanted certain information and opinions about diagnosis and
treatment.

Actually I thought about those reports after hearing Judge Engoron's ruling recently.
The judges always wanted to know if the people sitting in jail that I was evaluating
expressed any remorse, guilt about what they did. Sometimes they did, sometimes not.
But the judges took that into account in their decisions.

are very taxing and mentally draining dealing with those dilemmas every day. But the country really lacks Mental Health professionals they are needed more than ever.

I miss it. But yes it is very demanding, challenging and entails a great deal of responsibility
and high standard of care.

Yes managed care oligarchs ruined the mental health profession some decades ago.
They swooped in took over the mental health portion of the insurance company policies
and then just blatantly refused to pay for mental health services or paid a pittance.
Even though patients had mental health benefits in their policies.
The rich corporations pocketed the mental health money for themselves.
It was a real crime, but nothing we could do about it.
Vulture capitalism.

So psychologists were working for free or for peanuts
and that cannot last long.

Many professionals went out of business, and got other jobs.
I was able to hang in there, I ran my own small practice.
And kept my costs low.

Things did pick up, but mental health was not something many wanted
to take a chance on in terms of a career.

And now getting a PhD is so expensive to become a therapist.
So now there are more master's level therapists.
And psychiatrists make the lowest amount of all medical specialities.
So there is a real shortage.

because I see a need for Mental Health professionals to be called upon when police go on domestic home calls, and escalating the situation instead of de-escalating when they confront a mentally challenged person.

Mental health staff in hospital psych units work with acting out dangerous people all the time
and we don't need to kill them to get them under control. We have training on how to take down
out of control patients without hurting them. Get them in restraints and then sedate them if need be.

One of my family members works in a psych emergency dept of a hospital and is only 4ft 10 in tall.
With some help, she can take down a very big patient out of control who is threatening and dangerous.
I think if she can do it, police officers could too.

I did a bit of working with the police on domestic calls, it was not always a safe situation.
I worked for a county mental health clinic and was the liaison to the police and fire depts and courts.

This was 40 years ago and there were not so many guns back then but it could still be dangerous
when families are fighting. And once when I was riding with a police officer doing night patrol,
we happened to come across an armed robbery in progress, we were right at the scene by chance.

The officer I was riding with was a petite female, first female officer to be hired by the city.
And none of the males in her city dept would come to back her up just out of spite.

Thank god she was married to a man in the sheriff's county dept and help did come eventually from them.
But she apprehended the criminals by herself. My life flashed in front of my eyes during this situation.

I think if a mental health person is going to ride around with officers on patrol and going to domestics
they needs some police training as well in case the situation escalates.

Another option is for the police to learn how to identify mentally ill people and how to handle them
safely.
