Even in a blue state, in a blue city

Yet another cop gets off murdering a person of color.

She was a college student, who did nothing wrong. The officer was speeding and going on 74 miles per hour on a street (construction zone) with a speed limit of 25 mph. It was dark and he did not use his siren. Jaanhavi was in a marked crosswalk when she was struck.

After more than a year the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has declined to file charges against the officer claiming there isn't enough evidence (it's on film)

That was who the police murdered and the city covered for them.

But the question is, would the result (i.e., the cop getting off scot free) have been the same if the victim was white?

We'll never know for sure. I'm not a big fan of automatically assuming the worst, but I can't blame anyone for at least being highly suspicious.

But the callous response, lack of consequences, and absolutely no chance of policy change is disproportionate for brown and black people. The department's laughing about her life being worthless is race related.

Newly-released bodycam footage shows a Seattle police officer audibly laughing and joking on a phone call the day after an incident where a fellow officer had hit and killed a pedestrian with their patrol car.

The officer on the call is identified as Seattle Police Officers’ Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer. In it, Auderer can be heard speaking to SPOG President Mike Solan, as he talked about the incident where 23-year-old exchange student Jaahnavi Kandula was fatally hit by Officer Kevin Dave.

Shortly after saying “she’s dead,” Auderer laughs and says “it’s a regular person,” referring to Kandula. He then says “just write a check -- $11,000, she was 26 anyway, she had limited value.”

It doesn't fit the definition of murder, POC or not. More like manslaughter.

Reckless, definitely. He should be fired (the Police Union will fight that), and there should be policy changes - allowable speeds, siren requirements, etc.

There will be a civil lawsuit, her family will win, and the SPD (and the citizens of Seattle by extension) will pay. Millions.

This should NEVER happen, especially in a place that's urban enough for things like crosswalks. Description of the car, location, and direction should be called in. Cop should follow at the speed limit. Cops have choppers and soon they'll have racing drones to follow the car and see where it's headed. A tire strip can be deployed at an appropriate spot. Joyrider's not going to get far or fast on the rims. after all 4 tires are shredded.

That cop just had total tunnel vision, forgot everything he'd learned. about proper procedure. They'll throw the book at him.

Mis. Jaanhavi 's skin color had nothing to do with this. The cop was as reckless as the guy he was chasing. He'd have killed anyone in that crosswalk.

Leesa Manion is the first woman, the first person of color, and the first Asian-American to be elected to serve as King County Prosecuting Attorney. Leesa is also the first Korean-American woman in the United States to be elected Prosecuting Attorney.

Prior to her election in 2022, Leesa served as Chief of Staff of the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (PAO) for 15 years.

During the course of her career, Leesa has implemented effective programs that have improved public safety, enhanced victim services, and reduced racial disproportionality.

I'll add that "murder" implies intent. Irresponsible driving does reach that level.
