(2,805 posts)I live in a rather small town, so I got on the ballot just by getting my friends and neighbors to sign.
I wish you the greatest of luck in your campaign, and the least amount of frustration after you are elected.

(34,019 posts)... but they're not in your County. They live on the Lower East Side, within sight of the Williamsburg Bridge (about 2 blocks from the FDR). I don't know if that helps, but I could give them your info and they'd be happy to sign, I'm sure.
Best of luck to you!

I wish you the very best of luck, and if I lived there you would certainly have my vote!

(1,456 posts)And doubtful there will be any significant changes. That system has been in place for decades. Even the state committee people don't have much power.
lapucelle
(19,251 posts)no one asked me to sign a proxy, my county committee holds regular meetings, and we are instrumental in getting Democrats on the ballot, organizing phone banks and canvassing events for local, state, and national candidates, and then getting out the vote for their elections.
My question to anyone sneering at folks who have earned what is essentially a pretty humble seat at a not very grand table is
"What are you doing to get Democrats elected"?
SocialDemocrat61
(1,456 posts)But I know how things run in NYC. County committee is a nothing position here. There are over 4000 county committee people in Brooklyn alone. It's an unpaid volunteer position with no responsibilities or power. They would fill those positions with homeless if they could get away with it.
And I have no doubt that in smaller, less populous countries that county committees do more. But that's not how things are in NYC.
lapucelle
(19,251 posts)What are you talking about and who is the corrupt "they" that you keep referring to? Who is the "they" who you accuse of trying to get away with stuff?

SocialDemocrat61
(1,456 posts)County Chair. And it's not because they are corrupt, but because County committee is a very minor position in NYC and it's often a pain in the ass to recruit people.
lapucelle
(19,251 posts)I was never asked to sign a voting proxy.
Which borough were you in?
SocialDemocrat61
(1,456 posts)And there are over 4000 county committee people here. Having meetings and votes is really difficult. The one meeting they had when I was on county committee was in a small sports arena and had us all in the stands. It wound up being so chaotic nothing got done. Its easier to have all the county committee people give a vote proxy and let the district leader vote them as a bloc.

(34,227 posts)disparaging of someone who wants to get involved at the Grass Roots level?
SocialDemocrat61
(1,456 posts)But to act like they are running for some important position is just not the truth. Nothing I said is false. Just a dose of reality.
brooklynite
(96,806 posts)It wasn't an "important position" when I was Ward Committeeman in Philadelphia in my college days. Should I have left the seat open?

(16,533 posts)It was a sham election, as I kissed a lot of Party butt at the time. Sadly, I didn't keep up with it and got out of politics for a bit. This was around the time Bush was elected President. In any case, good luck!
LeftInTX
(27,748 posts)Only the party chair is required to have a petition here. We simply file and we're on the primary ballot. I got 80% of the vote when I first ran. All I did was make a few calls and handed out a few cards at the polls etc. The incumbent was totally awol to voters.
The position is what you make of it. Some people just join to hang out and stir up stuff at the County Executive Committee meetings. Others are very committed. I'm always trying to turn my precinct blue. I'm also in a bunch of committees etc.
Sounds like you have 4,000 precincts? Wow, Bexar County has 761, and about 25% are known as zero precincts. (Interstate access roads, vacant city lots etc) I have over 3,000 registered voters in my precinct. However, the difference between our area and NYC is homes are much more spread out, so my legs hurt alot during campaign seasons. But it's fun!
You'll do great!
