Today in the enshittification of, well everything, but certainly the internet.

Yahoo lays off the leaders of Engadget

Ten people at the outlet are losing their jobs, and the editorial staff will be split into two sections. A memo says strategy will focus more on traffic and collaboration with sales and SEO

For those not following the Great Enshittification, 'SEO' is Search Engine Optimization. It is the endless gaming of google search (97% market share monoploly) to put your spammy dubious malwarey page up in the top of googles search results.

Engadget was, like CNET, once a great web site to get decent reviews of many tech products. Like everything else it is being hollowed out to 'increase shareholder value' and focused exclusively on basically becoming spam itself.

That you cannot believe the Department of Justice didn't take a sledge hammer to ages ago.

Between them and Amazon, much of the internet is under growingly central - and highly unaccountable - control.

Tech will never be brought to heel until a lot of damage has already been done. Hell, just look at the state of social media.

And the reason for it is simple - tech pays really well. And not just their employees. And the gerontocracy that rules the country doesn't understand it or its implications. Just keep cashing those donor checks and employing those friends and family members and let the tubes flow.
