Jury finds NRA liable for mismanagement, says Wayne LaPierre violated duties
LaPierre, staring forward with his hands clasped in his lap, sat in the first row of the gallery while the jury read the verdict.
The New York Attorney General's Office sued the NRA and its senior management in 2020, claiming they misappropriated millions of dollars to fund personal benefits -- including private jets, family vacations and luxury goods. The accusations came at the end of a three-year investigation into the NRA, which is registered in New York as a nonprofit charitable corporation.

(38,162 posts)The NRA used to be for sportsmen, hunters and gun safety.
Now it has become an industry owned shill for the sale of more guns and the enrichment of its leaders.

Light bullets in the .30-06 can reach 3,000 fps, so the 5.56 isn't really that much of a newcomer to the high velocity stage.

(996 posts)... advocated for responsible firearms regulation, and conducted classes in gun safety. I was a member, until Wayne LaPierre happened.
Turds like him bob to the top of the punch bowl with tedious frequency, but people still act surprised when they see their true colors, even though they were clearly visible from the git go.
Such willful ignorance will be our undoing.

(38,162 posts)NRA dues and solicitations
comment from a blog (DU I think)
I had a coworker who was a big time gun owner who kept a gun in every room in the house just in case someone broke in (lots of problems with that idea, may be worth a blog article someday, but thats what he did). He even went so far as to start buying more guns for each room after a school shooting, like home invasion and mass shooting are correlated somehow. He had let his NRA membership lapse and refused to renew it because he got tired of nonstop requests for donations. To him all the membership did was give the NRA to badger him for more money with phone calls, and direct mailings. If the
organization is as strapped for cash as it appears, those solicitations may have gone way over the top and people are simply tired of being badgered for money and are choosing to let their membership to lapse.

. in N.Y. State when she had to do so. Tish James has all the receipts and I wouldnt be
surprised if she has got some big names including Ivanka to flip on the Trump organization.
Her thing was to shut down any business in N.Y. State that is part of the Trump scam network.

(71,213 posts)Trumps act as being a super rich guy is just that an act but I do think he and his clan grifted
big time when he was occupying the White House. Although I remember when wife #1

was a long time ago and I knew then he was a fraud.

(53,278 posts)Trump's building are said to be mortgaged. The lenders will want their money back I would think.
Yes I hope E. Jean Carroll is at the head of the line.
I agree, from the moment Trump walked into the WH, he was grifting big time.
He as so busy doing that he couldn't be bothered with presidential duties or briefings.
The problem is that Trump has always robbed Peter to pay Paul in his business, and he runs through
money like water. So no matter how much he got, he would end up cash poor I think.
That said, the Saudi's gave Jared $2B, so I wonder how much Trump got from the Saudis and Chinese.
Not to mention from Putin. Trump could have some big cash hidden somewhere after 4 years in the WH.

(1,183 posts).but the market for shot guns and deer rifles was limited, so the manufacturers switched to hand guns and assault rifles which could be sold to everyone for personal safety, which could be better marketed by a campaign of fear.

The far-right took over the NRA long ago and infected it and many in its membership base.
They have recently completed the same kind and scope of takeover of the American Christian evangelical movement. We shall soon see how that plays out. No doubt, very much like the effect Trump has had on the GOP.

I have reviewed a lot of the Trump fraud case.
If it isn't obvious, she did a such a good job, Trump's team couldn't muster enough of a response to justify a trial.
And now this: after decades of the NRA carrying on unscathed, finally, someone has held them to some account.
It's not the gun laws we'd like but not a bad black eye for the ring leader.

In news reports this week, the National Rifle Associations outside counsel, William A. Brewer III, has insisted that not a cent of the nonprofits money was ultimately spent on a plan to buy a multimillion-dollar Dallas mansion for top executive Wayne LaPierre.
But a document obtained by ProPublica shows that NRA money was used to help facilitate the purchase of a 10,000-square-foot Texas mansion for LaPierre, setting off alarms within the nonprofit. In response to questions about the transaction, the NRA on Thursday did not provide a comment or say whether the funds were eventually returned.
NRA accountants flagged a $70,000 payment to WBB Investments LLC in a document titled List of Top Concerns for the Audit Committee. They asked the audit committee to examine the payment, which they said was not properly documented.

This month, ProPublica reported on another document authored by a former senior employee in the NRAs treasurers office. The former employee, who resigned in November, alleged that Brewer tried to impede the accountants work. She said that he intimidated NRA staff and threatened our professional livelihoods, using coercive tactics such as the compilation of burn books, which were filled with sensitive personal information that could be used as leverage against staffers.
