Elected Democrats in Michigan on Sunday indicated they're unsure how President Joe Biden will perform in the state electorally ahead of the Tuesday primary, citing calls from the left for Michigan Democrats to vote uncommitted over his approach to the Israel-Hamas war.
During an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who serves as a surrogate in Biden's re-election campaign, was asked about divisions within the Democratic Party over the Israel-Hamas war, with Democratic lawmakers such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib calling on voters to vote uncommitted in protest of Biden's response to the war.
"How many uncommitted votes do you think were gonna see on Tuesday? How worried are you?" CNN anchor Dana Bash asked Whitmer.
Whitmer replied that she's "not sure" how Tuesday's primary will turn out, noting that Michigan has a "robust" Arab, Muslim and Palestinian community, as well a "robust" Jewish community.
"Weve lived in harmony as neighbors for decades, and theres a lot of pain all across all of these communities because of whats happening halfway around the world," she said, adding that she expects to see "differences of opinion" reflected in the primary and stressing that she doesn't want voters to "lose sight of the fact that any vote thats not cast for Joe Biden supports a second Trump term."

(597 posts)It's a dangerous narrative if we start to assign margins to the viability of a candidate, especially with the Michigan primary this Tuesday.
What if Biden only nets 60% of the vote in Michigan, with uncommitted and Phillips clocking in at 40%? Does that make Biden any less viable? Should we start questioning whether he's actually a strong candidate - especially in a state he almost certainly has to win in November?
Everyone here talking about how Trump struggled in South Carolina, despite winning 60% vs the former governor of the state, is going to be in an awkward position of trying to defend why Biden didn't do as well as he should have if he only nets 60 or so percent of the vote.
And don't get me started if Trump beats Haley by a larger margin than Biden beats "uncommitted".
It's a dangerous narrative that absolutely could start to undermine our side if "uncommitted" catches on among Democratic-leaning voters who want to protest Biden over whatever reason.
But if Biden wins the Michigan Democratic primary with 70% and Trump the Republican primary with 75%, does that instantly mean Biden is now underperforming?
No, not really.
But if we start playing that game, don't be surprised if you wake up Wednesday to a flurry of news articles questioning Biden's strength if he doesn't do great in the Michigan primary.
