I organized the first Vietnam protest that I ever heard of in Birmingham in 1970, and all of us, with permits and peace in our hearts got our heads bashed in within 10 minutes of marching,
by Birmingham cops with Billy clubs. I redirected my rage then and I’ve never stopped protesting and redirecting, rinse and repeat ad nauseum.
I’ve been around for 72 years and a Democrat in my DNA (NOT a Dixiecrat!) from the moment I said to my mother, driving around in Greenville,South Carolina, “look at that poor colored lady” when I saw a cold and disheveled and hungry person at a bus stop. She corrected me,gently and with no hate, just a genteel Southern upbringing: “There are no colored ladies , son. Just colored women”.
So, there’s no “c’mon now” for me, not in the twilight of my life, not in the sunset of my eternal optimism that things would be better. And in many ways they have. But in so many incredibly important ways, they’re worse, and all that’s left is me, redirecting rage, until the light flickers out for me.
