supportive, devastated family that was there for him and each other--well, all but one. This person was seemingly delighted in reminding the family at every single damned opportunity how he was going to die and that was that. One might assume initially that the intent was merely to help the family face reality and not be susceptible to false hope or fake treatment proposals. But as it went on day by day by day and I'd hear how horrific this was impacting the other family members, it somehow became something else--far more sadistic. I'm not sure it was intentionally so, but the effect was the same.
That is why I refuse to give in to negativity on this site. Discuss it, yes in a manner that conveys the seriousness and obstacles. But I refuse to post that "all is lost" but rather to be as hopeful as possible-- because I know, just like my patient's family, we have some here who are vulnerable and already holding on by a thread. I'm a realist too, but nothing can be gained by giving up. He WILL be held accountable in one way or another--even if not on our desired timeline. And it IS within our power to ensure he is not returned to office.
