Kamala Harris says there must be an 'immediate ceasefire' in Gaza

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/kamala-harris-ceasefire-gaza-b2506271.html

Vice President Kamala Harris called for Israeli officials and leaders of Hamas to accept a deal that would begin a six-week ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Sunday as she spoke in Selma, Alabama, on the anniversary of the civil rights march later known as “Bloody Sunday”.

“[G]iven the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be in immediate cease fire — for at least the next six weeks, which is what is currently on the table,” said the vice president, standing with her back to the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

She also delivered one of if not the sternest condemnations of Israel’s failure to allow humanitarian aid to citizens of the Gaza Strip, remarks that came after Israel’s military was widely condemned for opening fire as Palestinians swarmed an aid truck carrying flour.

“The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid. No excuses,” said Ms Harris.

Seems like most calling for one are only calling on Israel and ignoring the perpetrators of this war.

A neutered "there must be a ceasefire" and then saying what Israel's done/doing that's wrong.

Aid needs to get in. But it also needs to be inspected before it's allowed in. Then distribution systems to make sure that it doesn't feed and support a military, either directly or by letting the military deal with distribution and garner the good will.

By this time, you'd think they'd have worked out systems and means for cadres of Israeli inspectors to make sure a great volume of aid could get in, and some org would have worked out a way to get the aid to people. But no.

We let the Taliban get a lot of money and aid and it helped them--but, you know, those who suffer as a result are Afghans. We could (and did) walk away, washing our hands of it. Israel thought it could walk away from Gaza, but that was a very failing strategy.

I keep hearing you can't destroy an ideology, like I kept hearing that the USSR was secure and stable and would last 50+ years--and that was stuff published the month the USSR came apart. As for ideology, Germany wasn't very Nazi in 1949; the ideology was discredited and took a while to find a new direction, and even then the "Nazis" aren't much the parties but outliers; the word "Nazi", like "fascist," has undergone a lot of semantic spread (like the words "communist" and "socialist&quot .

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/03/israel-accepts-six-week-ceasefire-deal-as-hamas-response-awaited-us

Israel has provisionally accepted a six-week phased hostage and ceasefire deal which would begin with the release of wounded, elderly and female hostages, but it was still unclear on Saturday whether Hamas would accept it, US officials have claimed.

Talks took place in Doha, the Qatari capital, on Saturday and were expected to move to Cairo on Sunday as the scale of looming starvation pushed the US to start air-dropping food into the enclave.

The US said an extended ceasefire was the most direct route to getting large-scale aid deliveries into Gaza, and suggested that agreement was close. “The path to a ceasefire right now, literally at this hour, is straightforward,” a senior US official said. “And there’s a deal on the table. There’s a framework deal. The Israelis have more or less accepted it. And there will be a six-week ceasefire in Gaza starting today, if Hamas agrees to release the default defined category of vulnerable hostages: the sick the wounded, elderly and women. “We’re working around the clock to see if we can get this in place here over the coming week,” the official said. He said Israel had “basically” accepted the deal, but did not specify whether it still had reservations or what those were.

VP Harris is reflecting administration policy and the framework that is currently in play.

We're just waiting to see what Hamas does.

The vast majority of "immediate ceasefire" demands seem to be targeted solely at Israel and ignore the Hamas component entirely. A ceasefire is only as good as the party most likely to break it.

Until every hostage is back safely.

No negotiation, no compromise, no discussion, EVERY hostage back or keep escalating.

Hamas should be eliminated along with anyone who has supported it.
