Top Israeli official heads to Washington in defiance of Netanyahu: It is a sign of widening cracks in Israels government deep into the Hamas war.
"A top Israeli Cabinet minister headed to Washington on Sunday for talks with U.S. officials, sparking a rebuke from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to an Israeli official, in a sign of widening cracks in Israels wartime government nearly five months into its war with Hamas.
The trip by Benny Gantz, a centrist political rival who joined Netanyahus hard-line government early in the war following Hamas Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, comes amid deep disagreements between Netanyahu and President Joe Biden over how to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and create a post-war vision for the enclave."

(4,044 posts)4. Biden is in a very tight situation. He did not choose this.
He needs the votes of Israel supporters and Gazan supporters. (I try to be both.)
He doesn't have the choice to just stay out of it.
But, many are clearly on one side or another, and willing to blame Biden. Many want to see others on the other side die.
It is a seeming paradox that we send Israel weapons, but ask them to not bomb Gaza or not bomb too much.
The most obvious point is that if Biden loses to Trump (or another Republican), both Gaza and Ukraine will be done. And the whole world will be further along the slippery slope sliding into autocracies.
Biden (and his administration) is what stands between us and Putin (and his merry band of Republican political cannibals).
