I just finished my California mail in ballot. There are two Senate Contests one for the full 6 year term and the other for the four year term. Mail in ballots are at an all time low. But there are still a bunch of votes for Steve Garvey from older conservatives. Steve Garvey for California is like voting for Herschel Walker in Georgia. Sure I might have all the facts on this issue and I didn't think it was as big of a deal . When I looked at the ballot however it became a big deal.... Probably someone out there has more info on this. I've read in the news that Steve Garvey is beating Katie Porter. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter is who I voted for. Tell your friends it's important to vote on Tuesday. No Trump loving Steve Garvey!!!!

(10,702 posts)On the March primary ballot, voters will be asked to vote on two Senate races. Since Butler will serve as one of Californias two U.S. senators only until someone else is elected, the first race will decide who will hold the seat for the remainder of Feinsteins unexpired term from the date of the general election, Nov. 5, through the end of the term on Jan. 3, 2025. The second Senate race will determine who serves the next full six-year term as Californias junior senator, from January 2025 through January 2031.

(24,486 posts)Here in Wisconsin in 2010 with Obama as president, the Democrats controlled state government, the legislature and governorship. Then came the off-year midterms but too many on the Left were pissed off at Obama about healthcare or were just otherwise complacent and so they decided not to vote. But Republicans turned out to vote like it was their duty.
The result? In one election the state flipped from total Democratic control to total Republican control. Since 2010 was a census year, that meant when the Republicans took power in 2011 they set to work gerrymandering the state to help them get reelected and we've suffered from it for 13 years now with hope just beginning to show on the horizon.
The moral of the story is that when Democrats and those on the Left choose not to vote or vote for a 3rd party candidate who will only be a spoiler, bad things happen. Sadly, in my 50+ years of voting strictly for Democrats, I've seen this happen too many times. With California it could be just a senator compared with what happened here in 2010, but imagine Democrats losing control of the Senate by a single seat. Far, far worse, imagine Trump getting elected because too many on the Left chose not to vote in what is easily the most important election of our lifetimes.
Vote for the Democratic candidates. Just do it.

(11,370 posts)in which Padilla (who had been appointed to fill out Harriss term) ran for and was elected to both the remainder of that term and a full term of his own. Butler, who was appointed to fill out Feinsteins term, did not file to run in this primary so she will be out when the results of the November election are certified

(73,246 posts)this kind of gamesmanship at this point in time is just insane imho. i heard that schiff has actually boosted garvey, tho im not sure how.
its 1 thing to fart around w the gqp to pick the guy u want to run against anywhere else, but in a jungle primary? in such a blue state? malpractice.

(165,092 posts)so that really puts the onus on casting a vote in the primary instead of just sitting back and figuring to wait until the general.

(13,686 posts)would be easier to beat in the general election in heavily Democratic California. And I think the congressman is correct. Do you actually think that Garvey would beat Schiff in the general election? I don't.

(11,370 posts)California already has one senator duly elected to a full term in 2022. This year there are two contests. The first is to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Feinstein: that term runs from Nov. 2024-Jan. 3, 2025. That's because state election law says any vacated Senate seats will be filled at the next general election. The second is for the full term for that seat, Jan. 2025- Jan. 2031. This is explained in the state-wide voters' guide, and in some counties (Santa Clara, for example) was even stated on the ballot itself.
You can legally split your vote the way you described, but we don't get an extra senator (much as I think we deserve one).
