I think that there is a distinction between old establishment Republicans and the newer, crazier, fascist MAGA Republicans.
Someone like John McCain or Mitt Romney were old school type Republicans. As much as they were our opponents, they were not crazy and there were ways of working with them in a bipartisan manner. MAGA Republicans are a different breed. They are fascists that want to destroy the Constitution and burn our Democracy down. There is no way to work with them in a bipartisan manner.
So Nikki Haley is a conservative, but I am not sure that she has really drunk the MAGA kool aid. I think that she has to deal with MAGA Republicans but I am not convinced that she is one herself. Trump on the other hand is no real conservative. He is just a crazy demagogue who wants power.
Would Haley be more likely to defeat Joe Biden? I don't know. I just think that she is less of a danger to our Democracy than Trump and his crazy fascist MAGA minions are.
Anyway, my question is-- is there any possibility that older establishment Republicans could ever rise again and defeat the MAGA Republicans in their own party? And if so, would it not be better for our country if our opponents were old school establishment Republicans rather than this newer, crazier breed of Trump MAGA types?
Would it be better for our democracy if we had two mainstream parties again versus what we have now- sane Democrats against the crazy anti-democracy fascists in the MAGA party?

(1,323 posts)But it's gonna take a few electoral ass kickings (not just the presidency, but Congress) before that happens. As long as they keep it close they have no reason to really change. I mean right now they have the majority in the House. The GOP needs to be in the wilderness for about ten years (e.g. neither chamber of Congress) before the old school people retake the party.

I watched a Brookings symposium on video about Neoconservatism and it pretty much said it all.
The Neocons are awfully upset that Trump came along and spoiled their world vision.

The MAGAts control the House and might as well control the Senate, because the remaining trad conservatives there are afraid of Trump and his brownshirt voters.
The only wild card I see is if the mentally diseased traitor Trump is sentenced to a lengthy prison stay. That could be the impetus for a sea change in the GOP, but I wouldn't put my money on it.
