We need her voice, but Schiff deserves the Senate seat, He's fought the Trump Wars since the beginning.

(9,391 posts)If you run for higher office, you give up your seat. The congresswoman announces three days after her election that she was running for the Senate trying to freeze others out.

(14,173 posts)Running against Schiff was always a really long shot. And between the two, if i lived in CA, I probably would've voted for Schiff for Senate. But it would've been a tough choice.

(28,706 posts)There was some talk of California changing their laws related to running for two offices at the same time last year... but whether the law allows it or not, it would destroy what had been (pre Garvey) a solid chance of winning the senate seat.
It's hard to convince voters that you're "all in" for the higher office if you also want to hold your old seat in reserve - and possibly even harder to win the nomination for your existing seat if everyone knows that you don't want to actually keep it.
The CA jungle primary system makes this even tougher. The Republican actually took the top slot in the primary last night by almost double digits. Would the top Democrat (Dave Min) have gotten out of her way or might the primary vote have been further fractured (potentially putting two Republicans on the November ballot)?

(7,429 posts)She's excellent, I have nothing against her, but the whole CA Senate seat race on the Dem side was not something I was in favor of. I would support any of them, but in reality, they should have just say down and talked it through. Schiff was clearly the guy to beat, and they wasted a lot of energy, money, and a net two seats in the House for that.
Porter was my House representative. It's a purple district. I really wish she had run for re-election.

(40,972 posts)I was dumbstruck when I heard three of our reps were running for Feinstein's seat. It just seemed short-sighted & not very strategic to me especially at a time when we're fighting for our democracy. But maybe those are solid blue districts with no risk of going red. ???

(9,535 posts)Schiff's district is deep blue and safe.
Lee's district is also deep blue and safe.
Porter's is purple and at risk, though the turnout for the primary favored democrats. The Republican is the top vote-getter, but the two Democratic candidates' combined votes easily exceed his. Not necessarily indicative of the GE, but a sign odf hope, maybe?
IMHO, Porter should have stayed in the House for now. But I guess she saw the brass ring and decided to go for it. I can't really blame her for that, but it was probably not the best political decision of her career so far.

(10,909 posts)She had trouble winning her seat in 2022.
Part of the reason for this attempt was to get her into something a little more secure.
It would be awful to lose her service entirely.

(20,906 posts)As with Adam Schiff, Katie Porter is an effective Legislator. Joe will find a place for her given her knack for facts and numbers.
As for the Congressional Districts, Democrats will win them. Same in New York as well.
Biden would likely want someone who is more of a team player, who can be diplomatic with congresspeople and senators, as well as others in the Biden administration. Pete Buttigieg is a good example of that. Porter's calling card, on the other hand, is promoting herself by direct confrontation.

Anyway, last I looked Schiff was leading Garvey for the November election so I assume the same vote for interim.
