Whitmire: Is Katie Britt for real?Updated: Mar. 08, 2024, 2:08 p.m
Dont adjust your television. What we saw wasnt an AI deepfake. That was Katie Britt. That speech happened.
But dont call it real.
snip
Theres nothing I can quote from Britts speech that can convey the strangeness of it the mismatched emotions, the smiles in the wrong places, the jaw clenched when it shouldnt have been just the indescribable weirdness. It was something that had to be seen, but even then, couldnt be understood like postmodernism, avant-garde performance art or an involuntary behavioral science experiment.
Katie Britt glitched out on national television and left millions of Americans asking what the heck they just watched.
Even had she not, the odds were stacked against her. The rebuttal to the State of the Union has always been a trap for the politically ambitious. It doesnt matter how many bleached bones lie at the bottom of that pit, someone new will try to jump across when given the chance a dangerous shortcut to becoming a national political figure. And theyll be impaled at the bottom on its spikes with all the rest somewhere between Bobby Jindal and Marco Rubios water bottle.

(4,507 posts)The prize. Well never hear from her again.
The sacrificial lamb. It was bizarre and extremely creepy. That breathy voice and inappropriate smile. I have family in alabama and this was the first Id ever heard of her. She just tanked her career. She is from Enterprise Al which is the place of the boll weevil festival. (The boll weevil is a pest that infects cotton plants. I wonder if she was boll weevil Queen?)
Enterprise is quite close to the red neck Riviera, near Pensacola. Which is a hotbed of MAGA.

misanthrope
(9,495 posts)The state GOP and their friendly punditry will tell everyone within earshot that Britt is being unfairly treated by the same outside media that cruelly stereotypes Alabamians as being shoeless and moronic. That kind of tribalism and victimhood has worked like a charm in the Heart of Dixie for centuries and still produces dependable results.

(58,285 posts)So ironic that she would bring up rape. In Britt's state of Alabama, there is no exception for rape or incest.
Irish_Dem
(81,345 posts)Bringing up rape when her party is running a known rapist for president.
And there is no abortion exception for rape victims in her state.
And her graphic detail sounded odd in a professional speech.
Another MAGA seeming to enjoy talking about sexual activity.

But bringing up rape was a very bad idea when she wants a job with a rapist.

(12,670 posts)A woman on a mattress in a box sized room with men going in over and over again? Yeah, the details added nothing to her message except just more weird creepiness.
And the kitchen table? Really? Where is six-year-old Anthony Fremont from the Twilight Zone to send someone to the cornfield when you need him.
Irish_Dem
(81,345 posts)Yes it was creepy.
And she seemed to enjoy talking about it in more detail than necessary for
a national professional political speech on TV.

(35,176 posts)at 8 minutes. I could do no more. That is the well coached Church Lady cadence. I have been surrounded by these people my whole life and I just clench my teeth and try to get away as soon as possible. Too many girls and women's meetings in the LDS church or my relatives conservative evangelical churches. ***I remain free***
If you don't know, it is all taught. All fake. Every one of these ladies can become a snarly, hateful, rabid freak in one single instant, the batting of one eyelash. You want to see insanity just challenge them, Ka BOOM!
They teach young girls that way of speaking. ALL of it and we can all do it if we need to. Control baby is the name of the game and how could you ever be mad at the sweet church ladies? They may be stupid but look how much they care.
They will snap and snap hard. Explode and go right back into their quiet, sweet talking. The most dangerous of all, like a cobra. Ssssssss

(7,964 posts)Thanks for the info on a subject I was not familiar with. Right after it, I tuned in to CNN and that Alyssa Farah, former trumpie, went on and on about the kitchen but otherwise thought Birtt was great. I thought she, too, was insane.

Come on, we're not in the '50s anymore. Any woman wanting to be taken seriously as a political figure would reject that as a bad idea. And as a US Senator her objections would have to be taken seriously.
You'd think...but it's obviously the maga male-dominated party that apparently doesn't take women seriously.

oh so plaintively. Good golly Miss Molly, that was cringe-inducing, and showed her and her audience to be breathtakingly ignorant.
Yes, I know witches and pagans. However, millions of non-pagan non-witchy women around this country have met and still do meet to have rituals related to being women within their particular religious and cultural traditions. The ones who have the most trouble bringing it back home are Protestant and Evangelical Christians, and I think we all know why by now.

(20,906 posts)After a few minutes, I had to put Katie Britt on MUTE. Her whole spiel was nothing short of an audition for an ASPCA commercial begging for monthly donations to save animals. The emotional, tear jerking act was more of a turn off. No wonder she is getting hit with criticism.
And then Sen. Tubby responded with "Democrats HATE families!"

I wonder if that is also true of rebuttals by the Democrats when there is a Republican President. I suspect it is less the case - because Democrats can do something other than just whine.

(25,648 posts)I keep saying this, it was seriously the most Stepford thing I've ever seen. Her speech had a very peculiar effect, simultaneously fascinating like a high-speed 20-car pileup on a suburban sidestreet and revolting like "oh gross get that thing off my shoulder". With that single presentation she earned her spot as the dictionary illustration for "creep". I've never seen anything quite like it before.
