Trump says he considers Facebook 'an enemy of the people'

Former President Trump on Monday said he views Facebook as “an enemy of the people,” as he reiterated his opposition to a ban on TikTok.

“Frankly, there are a lot of people on TikTok that love it. There are a lot of young kids on TikTok who will go crazy without it. There are a lot of users,” Trump said on CNBC’s SquawkBox. “There’s a lot of good and a lot of bad with TikTok. But the thing I don’t like is, without TikTok you can make Facebook bigger. And I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people, along with the media,” Trump added.

CNBC journalists noted Trump had previously described TikTok as a national security threat during his first term in the White House. Trump said he still believes that’s the case, saying the government must protect Americans’ “privacy and data rights.” “If you look at some of our American companies… they’re not so American,” Trump said. “They deal in which, and if China wants anything from them, they will give it. So that’s a national security risk, also,” he said.

“But when I look at it, I’m not looking to make Faecbook double the size, and if you ban TikTok, Facebook and others, but mostly Facebook, will be a big beneficiary,” Trump added. The former president confirmed he recently met with Jeff Yass, a major GOP donor and investor in TikTok. But he said Yass did not bring up TikTok during the conversation.

His campaign manager knew they could reach the older voter market through Facebook.

They got access to more detailed data than they should and targeted individual voters with micro ads. They created 100s of thousands of different ads. It worked.

But Facebook didn't let the same thing happen in 2020 and they won't let it happen in 2024 either. Sounds like TickTok cut a deal with Trump, so expect them to tilt the election coverage his way just like Musk is doing with Twitter.

He's throttling President Biden's Tweets, and Tweets that are positive about Biden while promoting and elevating Tweets critical of Biden. Basically, people's feeds are inundated with anti Biden material, so those Tweets get millions of views while the President's Tweets get a fractio of the views, likes, and reTweets they used to get.

It's obvious, Biden will Tweet out something and get like 3,000 likes where a few years ago he was getting 3 million likes.

Facebook and other social media and their lackluster (and, often, nonexistent) record on combating misinformation contributed to the normalization of Trump, fake news, and a post-truth society.

Traditional media often gets the blame, but social media supercharged it.
