The house voted today to ban the app unless its sold.
That wrong. Period. I wont install it on my phone but thats my choice. The government should have no say over what app a private company chooses to put on their App Store especially one that is a social media app.

(31,561 posts)everyone knows how VPNs work... we could do a similar thing with the actual web data and apps...
invent an app that translates user X and their bank accounts and location data... and anonymize it out of the control of the Chinese. This would require the establishment of fake bank accounts, etc.
Then the data that tiktok captures is useless.
As for their shaping the posts/videos the things American see... I suppose we could control the content coming this way as well.
If Tiktok doesn't like it... they can stuff it and lose 100 M users in the USA.
It is sort of like a competing ap but not disconnected from tiktok in the rest of the world.

(8,568 posts)if the argument is that there are concerns about data privacy, the same is true for most other social apps.
It's possible to buy data from Facebook about all sorts of things users do and are for example so the Chinese can also do that anyway.
If it is about stopping disinformation, again the same issue exist elsewhere.
That bill is taking a sledgehammer to a problem that requires a more targeted approach.
it's going to backfire big time. Another perfect example of our elected officials being uninformed about tech and the innerworkings of the internet platforms in general, yet legislating anyway.

Its not going to shut down tik tok.
Its just going to cut the cord to China.

(17,802 posts)It would be a business deal. Musk aside, which wasn't business, no consortium is going to spend a hundred billion and spoil it.
They are going to try to grow it.
Nurture it.
Let it grow.
Musk had an agenda that had nothing to do with growing a company.
Don't worry about it.

Rip up some papers and yell, "Free speech won't end on my watch!" Have all the kids cheer.
That would be a viral moment. lol.
Now if tiktok pulls a fast one after that, Biden would have to use his "immunity" powers.
Just kidding.

(7,289 posts)I ordered two new mouse pads, looks like they are coming from China, are they now illegal?
I get not allowing it on government devices, plenty of software not allowed on most company owned devices. But an out right ban in the US? May as well be a limited embargo. And as far as security goes, didn't Russia hack a US company recently capturing a meeting between German officers?
Flip side, I get the hysteria, sadly. Ran into an old colleague recently. We used to work at the same company until they eliminated his department (then brought it back with younger people with less benefits), since he was a reservist, he used his contacts to get a job at the DoD. Always told me if I needed a job, let him know.
I eventually left the company for a non profit and happy. Ran into him again, and I mentioned a relative just got their degree in engineering. He asked for the name and gave me the website for one company that works with the DoD, said they are always hiring. I pointed out we have a Russian background. His response, "Oh we don't care about the Russians, they know as much as we do. It's the Chinese we worry about, they are not up to par with either one of us yet, but damn well trying to get there".

Trump is taking advantage of the situation- telling Gen Z - hes fine with TicToc.
We were losing the young vote over Palestine- now add the kids freaking out over TicToc. Not just kids- 55% of Americans.
Whose idea was this???

(5,410 posts)I agree with you.
And the government can't really "ban" the app--- it will continue to work for all those who are already using it.
They can only prevent the download sites from continuing to carry it--- in effect, preventing new users in this country from downloading it from a download site based in this country (although the more enterprising could likely download it from a foreign site, I suspect).
As far as the 'security threat', I think it's all bullshit.
DEMOCRATS and President Biden ought to oppose this effort,
because a big part of our base LOVES it.
Maybe I should figure out how to make my own little video and post it there! LOL
Maybe a video of me beating the hell out of a Trump effigy!
and then peeing on it! and then BURNING it! (hope the pee does not prevent ignition!)
Wow, that might generate a lot of views! HAHAHAHAHA

(10,681 posts)Many are upset the kids are watching a genocide in real time. Otherwise - I see
Lots of people dancing, lots of adorable kids, mixed race couples showing off their large big beautiful families, tons of severely disabled kids - getting good wishes from American kids, seniors dressing in sexy clothes & dancing, kids telling horrible life experiences etc. I havent felt any kids over on Twitter are trying to brainwash me - they are all very into themselves &
marketing their lifestyles - living in vans, cars, tiny houses etc. its endless & many are making a good living at marketing themselves.

(690 posts)I mean, I absolutely think it is wise to ban it from all federal employee's work devices. I also think people should be discouraged from using it. However, the idea of banning it seems too much like something China or Russia would do. That rubs me the wrong way. But at the same time, it is a risk .. but so are all the other social media networks.
Then there is the practical aspects of it. Sure, remove it from the stores, but people will just side load it. I supposed we could talk about blocking connections, but that some great firewall of China stuff.. it would also be mostly ineffective since VPNs will bypass that. Well, unless we get really really creepy
