Peter Navarro Must Report to Prison

March 18, 2024 at 5:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 46 Comments

Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro must report to prison Tuesday after Chief Justice John Roberts shot down his last-ditch bid to remain free while appealing his contempt of Congress conviction, The Hill reports.

It will make him the first key Trump adviser to serve jail time over efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Roberts denied the application without referring it to the full court. When that happens, the applicant may renew the application to any other Justice of his or her choice, and theoretically can continue until a majority of the Court has denied the application.

That rarely happens, so hopefully Navarro won't keep trying or if he does, he gets shot down again and has to report to jail.

Can’t imagine him not judge shopping.

Seems like it would cause trouble if another one said he could stay out . thumb their nose at the rule of law 👺

I figured his request would be denied, but I also thought Roberts would grant a brief administrative stay to allow the full court to consider the application and the opposition ( which was just filed today ). But Roberts didn't even refer the matter to the rest of the Court before denying it -- a very rare move.

But here's the rub: If a Justice acts alone to deny an application, a petitioner may renew the application to any other Justice of his or her choice, and theoretically can continue until a majority of the Court has denied the application.

So Navarro could go to any other Justice. It doesn't happen often and generally, after one justice denies a petition, a second justice getting the petition won't act unilaterally to grant it but will refer it to the rest of the court.

He is serving time for refusing to testify to congress and to turn over documents.

He was not charged with any crimes related to j6 or election interference.

Neither was Steve Bannon, or Mark meadows (at the federal level), or Roger stone, or any other high level trump administration official.

I'm looking at you, merrick garland.

"safe"? Where will the 74 year old Navarro serve his time? In the laundry or the library?

I haven't seen mention of exactly where he will be doing his time resting. There are a few options in and around Miami.

4 months, LOL! Not even enough time to warm his bunk

Federal camps are the easiest and cushiest prison time you can do in this country. They don't even have a fence in most cases, and they have great facilities (like tennis and bocce, etc.) And everyone is on their best behavior, because they are close to being released, and they don't want to get bumped up to a worse higher security facility for disciplinary reasons. It's literally like a daycare camp.

I was hoping he'd land in the lockup downtown, given how short his sentence is. His lawyer did a good job getting the judge to designate him to a camp.

He's complaining about 4 months in a camp, what a whiny snowflake.
