The World Watched and Went WTF?
Every time I see some one who supports the dumpster fire of a human being, I will let them know that the whole world knows that he will not be anywhere near the oval office again and he will end up in prison.
Then just smile and wave goodbye.
I am going to take my optimism and run with it. Good night to all here at DU, I love you all and there will be peace if we all just continue to love, live and carry on the good fight.
Now, I need to go get some wipes for my keyboard as I hate typing that name.

(17,802 posts)If either candidate fails to get 270 certified electoral votes, the house shall meet to elect the president and the senate shall elect the vice president.
Paraphrased.
How would that happen?
Third party candidates win a state or two. Or maybe chaos prevents states from certifying biden electors.
Whatever. If neither candidate gets 270, it goes to the house.
But constitutionally sound. Unfortunately, the way the system works, Republicans would get a majority of votes in the house and would choose the next president.
Basically, each state delegation of the new congress selects one rep to cast a vote. Because there will be more majority gop than dem delegations, they will choose the president.

(5,960 posts)Yes, I am being optimistic tonight, but I have American history on my side.
I will refer back to General Smedley Butler who was tapped by the fascists to over throw the US government. He led them on and once they were all fully ensnared and committed he turned them in as the traitors they were.
I truly believe there is a General Butler out there right now willing to save our democracy should it come to that dire outcome.

I have been on this since I joined DU in summer 2018, and it simply is not going to happen.

(13,474 posts)All they have to do is manipulate the vote count is some key districts in swing states enough to get the Electoral College majority. The Republican elections officials in Arizona come to mind, especially in Maricopa County, as they have refused to recognize the legitimacy of any election a Democrat wins. Republicans broke into the offices of Coffey County, fortunately after the 2020 election, in the dead of night and copied all the voting records and perhaps more importantly the Dominion voting machine software. Im sure those copies were then shared to other states with Dominion machines. What is to stop Republicans from sneaking into local offices after the machines have been tested and certified ready for the votes and modifying them to overcount Republican votes and undercount Democratic votes. Supposedly machines are sealed. Who will identify that they have been tampered with if Republicans are in charge? Sorry for being paranoid, but I think we trust Republicans far too much to do the right thing.

(15,909 posts)But even 5% odds of Trump being President again are terrifying. (See: downside risk).
Further, Biden winning still won't be enough to alleviate my disgust that so large a portion of the American public will vote for Trump after all they've had a chance to see. Winning doesn't magically erase that problem. Booking marking this OP has nothing to do with it.

(5,960 posts)I'm a little sad, my post was meant to lift spirits, not dash them.
As for the premise of intelligent enough Americans, I said I was being 'Optimistic'.
I also don't believe in stupid as a word used to cite levels of intelligence.
There is ignorance and low IQ, but 'stupid' is a derogatory word meant to insult, inflame and incite during a verbal confrontation and not meant to convey actual intelligence level.
I stand behind my premise. TFG will not be the resident again.

(5,960 posts)If there was NO media coverage of his crazy, no indictments or a immunity ruling, then yes, I might be a little less optimistic.
But barring all that, I keep hearing my grand father in my head telling me about fighting fascists and how they had to stay optimistic in the face of terrible conditions.
They won.
So shall we.
For those worried about state election officials in swing states not certifying the results, keep in mind that unlike in 2020, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania now have democratic Governors, Secretaries of State and AGs, so certification will not be an issue. And even in Georgia, both the governor and Secretary of State, though republicans, have a record of honesty when it comes to elections.

(5,960 posts)because I do believe that 'most' Americans are intelligent enough not to vote for the orange one since he never once won the popular vote and this time he will lose even more voters.
