SPOKANE, WA Usually, the most upsetting part about exiting the NCAA Tournament is losing before you want to. That wasnt the case for Utah womens basketball.
Head coach Lynne Roberts revealed in her postgame press conference after the Utes lost to Gonzaga in the second round of the NCAA Tournament that her team experienced racism toward the beginning of their trip that forced them to move hotels.
Our team hotel was in Coeur dAlene, Idaho, which is not very close, Roberts said. Its 35-40 minutes, so that was a little strange, but whatever. We had several instances of some kind of racial hate crimes towards our program and it was incredibly upsetting for all of us. ........................(more)

Not that I plan to go to Coeur d'Alene anytime soon. Beautiful landscape, but the hideous people count is far too high.

(1,344 posts)The racist incidents happened not at the hotel, but from local yahoos:
We all just were in shock, and we looked at each other like, did we just hear that? ... Everybody was in shock our cheerleaders, our students that were in that area that heard it clearly were just frozen, Green told KSL.com. We kept walking, just shaking our heads, like I cant believe that I was just numb the entire night.
When the group came back from dinner, something similar happened, this time with two trucks revving their engines. The n-word was directed at the group again.
I will never forget the sound that I heard, the intimidation of the noise that came from that engine, and the [n-word], Green said. I go to bed and I hear it every night since Ive been here ... I couldnt imagine us having to stay there and relive those moments.

The NCAA needs to issue a warning about the dangers of visiting or staying in Coeur d'Alene.

That's a lot of hate in one small pocket of the US.

He took his family there for a week, and they didnt get through 4 days of it before his wife asked him to take her back home because people there were making her very uncomfortable. Shes of Filipino ethnicity.
Its not even that she got the overt n word harassment, its the whole subtle everything that goes on in a place like that where the goons know theyre impervious to any repercussions.

Unfortunately, all it takes is a handful of assholes to fuck it up for everyone else.

Although I have to say, if the other residents are silent about this stuff they are somewhat complicit.
